John "Jake" William Madden (born June 11, 1865 in Dumbarton , † April 17, 1948 in Prague ) was a Scottish football player and coach . From 1905 to 1930 he trained Slavia Prague .

Player career

Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, Madden first played for local clubs Albion and Hibernian. In 1886 he joined Dumbarton FC . Shortly thereafter, however, he played for the northern English club Gainsborough Trinity .

Celtic Glasgow invited Madden to the club's first game on May 28, 1888 in Glasgow . Although the striker failed to score in the 5-2 win against Glasgow Rangers , Celtic decided in 1889 to sign Johnny Madden. For the Hoops , Madden scored 38 goals in 92 league games and the attacker scored 11 times in 26 cup matches. John Madden was Scottish Champion with Glasgow Celtic in 1893, 1894 and 1896 and Vice Champion in 1892 and 1895.

For the Scottish national team Madden ran twice. The center forward made his debut on March 18, 1893 in an 8-0 win against Wales in Wrexham . Madden scored four goals. He had to wait five years for his second assignment. On March 23, 1885, Scots and Welsh met again in Wrexham and drew 2-2. Madden had meanwhile met to equalize 1: 1.

Madden remained loyal to Celtic through the 1896-97 season despite an offer from Sheffield Wednesday in 1892. He then played briefly for Dundee FC and joined Tottenham Hotspur in December 1897 . In London , he ended his playing career at the age of almost 33.

Coaching career

When Celtic Glasgow toured Central Europe in spring 1904 and met Slavia Prague in Bohemia on May 25th, John Madden was also part of the tour group. Slavia's functionaries were able to win Madden as coach for the team from February 1905. Madden introduced revolutionary training methods in Prague, and he was also considered an excellent medical professional.

Madden won several titles with Slavia. In 1908, 1910, 1911 and 1912 the team won the so-called Charity Cup, the most important cup competition in Bohemia at the time. In 1913 and 1915 Slavia won the championship of the Czech Football Association ČSF. Before the start of an official national championship, Slavia won in 1918 and 1924 in the so-called Středočeská župa , the strongest competition in Czechoslovakia . In the seasons 1924/25 and 1928/29, the red-whites won the Czechoslovak championship under Madden. The team also won a total of four times in the most important cup competition at the time, Středočeský pohár , namely in 1922, 1926, 1927, and 1928.

Even after his resignation in 1930, Madden Slavia remained loyal and worked in the background. In 1938, the Scot was happy to win the Mitropacup .

Private life

John Madden was one of nine children of Irish immigrants Edward Madden and Agnes McIlvain who lived on 71 High Street in Dumbarton. He was baptized in St. Patrick's Church and attended the school of the same name. After finishing school he worked as a riveter in a shipyard on the River Clyde .

During his visit to Prague in the spring of 1904, he met his future wife Františka Čechová. The two of them had a son named Jindřich, who died before his parents died. John Madden is buried in the Olšanský hřbitov cemetery next to his son and wife, who died in 1963.
