Jonathan "Jon" Conway (born May 6, 1977 in Media , Pennsylvania ) is a former American football goalkeeper .

Career

Youth and amateur football

Conway began his active career as a football goalkeeper with FC Delco , a football club from the eastern part of Pennsylvania. In 1996 Conway moved to Rutgers University in New Jersey , where he came to a variety of assignments with the local soccer team, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights . After finishing his studies, his younger brother Scott, who was also studying at university, took over Jon's place on the football team. During his senior year at Rutgers University, Conway was elected to the NSCAA All-American Second Team in 1999. He was in the All-Region First Team selection for three years in a row (1997-1999) . His greatest successes at university were the Big East Conference Goalkeeper Awards in 1998 and 1999. With Conway's help, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights won the Big East Regular Season in 1999 for the first time in their history .

Club career

At the MLS SuperDraft 2000 Conway was drafted in the 2nd round as the 28th pick to the San José Earthquakes , which have their game operations in the Major League Soccer (MLS). At first only as a substitute goalie for Joe Cannon , Conway came to several professional assignments for the Quakes after his departure to RC Lens in France . He made his debut for San José in the 2001 season . In 2000 Conway moved on loan to the USL Premier Development League , which is regarded as a fourth class amateur league, to the Bay Area Seals , where he came to a total of four missions. In the five years in which he was a member of the San José Earthquakes, he came to a total of 18 championship appearances and was two-time MLS Cup winner (2001 and 2005).

After the 2005 season , Conway was drafted to the MetroStars in exchange for a draft place in the 4th round of the MLS SuperDrafts 2006 . After his first season with the club, the goalkeeper had twelve championship appearances in which he got an average of only one goal per game, which also meant the best performance of an MLS goalkeeper this season. After the takeover of the club by the Austrian beverage manufacturer Red Bull and the subsequent renaming of the club to New York Red Bulls , Conway made another twelve league appearances in the 2007 season , in which he scored an average of 1.10 goals per game. Controversy arose in 2008 when Conway tested positive for two different doping substances and was banned from playing ten games. In the meantime he was replaced by goalkeepers Danny Cepero and Alec Dufty . Conway made his comeback on April 18, 2009, when he was back in goal for the Red Bulls in a 2-0 away win over Real Salt Lake . During his time with the New York Red Bulls, he made a total of 62 championship appearances. On June 29, 2009, he was dismissed from the club to create a free place in the squad for the new goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul .

In September 2009, Conway's rights, which according to MLS guidelines were still held by the New York Red Bulls, were given to Chivas USA . This was in return for a fourth round pick of the 2011 MLS Superdraft .

In March 2010, Conway moved to Toronto FC . He should replace the previously released Brian Edwards. Conway first played for Toronto on May 19, 2010 in the Canadian Championship against the Vancouver Whitecaps . He completed his only MLS game for the Reds on October 16, 2010 in the game against the Columbus Crew. In the 72nd minute he received the red card.

On January 13, 2011, he moved to Chicago Fire. Toronto received the 49th pick in the MLS SuperDraft in return. At the end of the season, the contract was not extended. Conway entered the 2011 MLS Re-Entry Draft and was selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy . Shortly afterwards he announced the end of his career.

Conway has been the goalkeeping coach at Toronto FC since August 31, 2014.

Doping result

On October 16, 2008 it was announced that Conway and his teammate Jeff Parke had tested positive for the steroids androstadienone and boldenone metabolites . The two doping cases were the first in the 15-year history of Major League Soccer. Conway and Parke were subsequently banned from playing 10 league games and were fined 10% of their salary.
