Jorge La Guardia (born April 21, 1937 in Albaicín ) is a Spanish artist who lives and works on Engelbosteler Damm in Hanover .

Life

Jorge La Guardia was born in 1937 to a vegetable farmer in the old town of Granada during the Spanish Civil War . At the age of 14 he began training as a locksmith . From 1951 to 1958 he attended the art school in Granada. There he made his first ironwork.

In 1958, La Guardia moved to an artist group in Ibiza , and a year later to Barcelona , where he was deeply influenced by the work of the Catalan architect and artist Antoni Gaudí . However, he still earned his livelihood there with folklore and small copper works.

In 1961, La Guardia visited what for him was “mysterious Germany ” - and has stayed there until today. In 1966 he worked as a welder for the Henschel company . Meanwhile, drafts and the first small steel sculptures were created.

In 1969, La Guardia produced plasterwork and miniature terracottas in homework . A year later he made steel sculptures and works in copper and through his friendship with the guitarist Hans Haider found a connection between folklore and sculpture.

In 1970 La Guardia first met the artist Hans-Jürgen Breuste, who was then active in Linden , during the “Wood and Iron Age”. Both artists have since exercised mutual influence.

Nevertheless, the artistic work was not yet enough to make a living: At the end of 1970, La Guardia started working for the Günter Bode company . During this time, a number of sheet steel sculptures and samples in copper and concrete were created, as well as some deep reliefs.

The big turning point came in 1975: “Of vital importance” for the artist was the establishment of his first own studio, which he and a friend had done . In the workshop with an exhibition room he created his first large outdoor sculptures made of iron and steel for street art. In November of the same year, the first large- scale sculptures were unveiled in the garden city of Tollenbrink in Hanover, “Altamira - Dona Rosita - Antonio.” In the meantime, contact with the Argentine painter Maria Fraxedas and Angel Balbuena, who worked in the background, led to a change in La Guardia's work.

La Guardia also deals with painting.

In 2004 he performed at the Masala Music Festival, played guitar to his own singing , accompanied by the flamenco guitarist Miguel Casas and the dancer Carmen Salado.
