Born in Montevideo as the son of European immigrants, he first returned to Europe in 1890. There his family settled in Lugano , Switzerland . Belloni attended the local art school and was a student of Luis Vasseli . In 1899 he briefly returned to Uruguay. However, he soon enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Back in Europe, he took part in numerous exhibitions with his works. After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown of Montevideo. There he worked for the Comisión del Círculo Fomento de Bellas Artes until 1914, where he took over his position in 1914 after the death of the painter and director of the Círculo, Carlos María Herrera . As early as 1910, Belloni, who created a large number of works in the following years and was also a lecturer at the architecture faculty of the Universidad de la República , was awarded a silver medal at the Exposición de Arte del Centenario Argentino for his work Angustia . Many of his sculptures are now located in important squares and parks in the city of Montevideo. His ox wagon ( La Carreta ), created in 1919, is in Parque José Batlle y Ordóñez , while the stagecoach ( La diligencia ) from 1952 can now be found in Parque Prado . El Entrevero , created in the year of his death, forms the center of the Plaza Fabini , which is popularly known today as the Plaza del Entrevero , based on this sculpture consisting of intertwined riders on horseback fighting . In the Montevidean Barrio Maroñas , Avenida José Belloni is an important street named after him.
Belloni is the father of the sculptor Stelio Belloni .
