José Fernando Osório Soares

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Fernando Osório Soares (* 1937 ; † late 1975 or June 27, 1976 with Same , East Timor ) was an East Timorese politician and General Secretary of the Associação Popular Democrática Timorense APODETI ( German  Timorese Social Democratic Association ).

Life

Osório Soares was originally a school teacher who worked for the state health agency Assistência Social . Rumor has it that he was fired from service there on charges of rape. In Dili he was given a small post as a civil servant, but was allegedly dismissed there after three years for fraud. Soares himself claimed that the Portuguese discriminated against him because of his pro-Indonesian attitudes.

After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal , political parties were allowed in East Timor. Soares was initially a member of the ASDT , later FRETILIN , but then founded APODETI with others in May 1974, which sought to join Indonesia as an autonomous province. The party was financed by Jakarta . Soares became General Secretary of APODETI and its chief strategist. He set up the structures and elected the members of the inner circle of power, including his brother-in-law Pinto Soares .

Ramos-Horta tried several times to win Osório Soares to support an independent East Timor, but he could not be convinced despite concessions. Ramos-Horta also attributes this to the influence of the then Indonesian consul in Dili Elias Tomodok .

Soares was eventually murdered by FRETILIN supporters. A source states that it happened at the end of the civil war in August / September 1975 , which broke out between UDT, APODETI and KOTA on the one hand and FRETILIN on the other after the attempt by the UDT to take power in the colony by force . A pro-Indonesian source cites June 27, 1976 as the date of death, when the FRETILIN was already fighting against the Indonesian invasion. According to this source, Soares is said to have been captured by FRETILIN fighters along with other family members and murdered near Same ( Manufahi district ).

Others

José Fernando was the brother of José Abílio Osório Soares , the last Indonesian governor of East Timor. The sister Lucia Osório Soares was briefly married to the FRETILIN founder Francisco Xavier do Amaral . Nicolau dos Reis Lobato , Vice President of FRETILIN, was the siblings' cousin.

Brother of Mariazihna, the wife of José Fernando Osório Soares, was the APODETI activist Pinto Soares. Their father, Miguel Soares, was Liurai from Uma Quic , in the Viqueque sub- district and the only APODETI supporter among the Liurais in the sub-district.

In addition to languages from his homeland, Soares also spoke Indonesian .

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and FRETILIN activist José Ramos-Horta describes Osório Soares as intelligent, arrogant and uncompromising. The reporter Jill Jolliffe , however, called him an honest man who stood up for the educated part of the Timorese population.
