José Freire de Oliveira Neto

José Freire de Oliveira Neto (born March 9, 1928 in Apodí , † January 10, 2012 in Mossoró ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Mossoró .

Life

José Freire de Oliveira Neto studied philosophy at the St. Therese seminars in Mossoró and in São Leopoldo as well as Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He graduated from the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome with a degree in educational science specializing in catechesis . He received in Rome by the 22 September 1956 Luigi Cardinal Traglia the priesthood . He was a teacher, pastor, director of the Instituto Amantino Câmara , rector of the St. Therese seminary , director of the diocesan seminary in São Leopoldo and episcopal vicar for the congregations of sisters .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 3, 1973 titular bishop of Illici and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Mossoró . The bishop of Mossoró, Gentil Diniz Barreto , gave him on June 2, 1974 in the chapel of the Pontifical Brazilian Pius College in Rome the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Frans Janssen CM , Apostolic Vicar Emeritus of Gimma , and Lucas Moreira Neves OP , Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity . His episcopal motto was configuratus morti ejus (Phil, 3, 10; "His death should shape me").

On May 21, 1979 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Mossoró. With the resignation of Gentil Diniz Barreto, he succeeded him - still during the military dictatorship - on March 14, 1984 as Bishop of Mossoró.

He was involved in the Brazilian Bishops' Conference Confederação Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil (CNBB) for catechesis.

On June 15, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
