Josef Bachem (born June 30, 1881 in Mülheim am Rhein ; † April 3, 1946 in Berlin-Johannisthal ) was a German architect . Few of Bachem's buildings are known; after a few houses and villas, he designed several church buildings in and around Berlin from the 1920s . These brick buildings in the style of Expressionism and Classical Modernism were formative for Catholic church building in Berlin and are now mostly under monument protection .

Life

Bachem attended the building trade school in Cologne and passed the final exam in the 1901 summer semester. From 1905 to 1917 he was an assistant at the architecture faculty of the Technical University of Darmstadt . He then worked for Arthur Müller Bauten und Industriewerke (AMBI) in Berlin until 1920 . From 1920 he ran his own architecture office at his home in Johannisthal, Sternplatz 4a , initially together with the government builder and architect H. Kocheim. Before 1929 he became a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA). The following year he was the sole owner of the office. In 1929 he moved to Sternplatz 13, where he stayed until his death in 1946.
