The Josef Cembran winery in Linz is a traditional family business . The winery is located between Bauernberg and “Märzenkeller” at 6 Kellergasse.

The founder Josef Cembran originally came from Cembra in Trentino . After completing his military service in the imperial army, he founded a South Tyrolean wine tavern on Klammstrasse in Linz in 1897 .

In 1904 he bought a cellar on the Bauernberg, which dates back to Roman times . This is today's company headquarters. Cembran was successfully sworn in as a supplier of mass wine to the Diocese of Linz in 1907 . But not only high-ranking gentlemen in Linz and the surrounding area were supplied by the Cembran winery, but also the imperial court near Vienna. In 1908 he was awarded the title of " kuk court supplier " for his services and because of the high quality of the products .

Despite the First World War and the collapse of the dual monarchy, the company continued to exist. In the 1920s, Cembran had Fritz Fanta , a student of Otto Wagner , build the residential and business building in the late Art Nouveau style.

During the Second World War , Cembran opened its gates to those seeking protection from bombing attacks, the Cembran tunnel connected to the cellar could accommodate around 4,000 people. The milling machine for digging the tunnels can still be viewed today.

The company was able to recover in the post-war years. The designated successor Josef Cembran jun. learned the wine trade early. He learned practice in companies in France and Italy, he learned theory in cellar management and oenology at the Viticulture School in Klosterneuburg . He had studied world trade at the University of Florence and at Kremsmünster Abbey . In 1963 Josef Cembran jun. into the winery and expanded it further. The basement was also converted in the 1980s for use for private and company celebrations.

The successor Romano Cembran graduated from the Bundesrealgymnasium Honauerstraße in Linz and then did his military service. He studied wine management in Krems and then worked at wineries in Napa Valley , California. In January 2000 he was appointed authorized signatory and commercial director of the winery. Josef Cembran jun. retired on August 1, 2001, the company and the property were thus handed over to Romano Cembran. He himself has a son Fabio (born January 29, 2001).

Winery and Products

The winery dates back to Roman times and is open 24/7 except Sundays. The brick vault is up to 12 meters high and can hold up to 400 people for various occasions such as celebrations, but also for techno / drum and bass parties.

Mainly Austrian wines are bottled, the grape varieties come from different wine-growing regions. For the self- filled Hohenwarther Grüner Veltliner , the grapes for the Rheinriesling , Rivaner , Sauvignon Blanc , Welschriesling , Zweigelt , Blauburger and Blauen Portugieser come from Pöttelsdorf , Schrattenberg and Rust . In addition, French such as Pinot nero, Bordeaux and Italian imported wines such as Chianti are offered.
