Josef Forster

Josef Forster (born April 6, 1844 in Nonnenhorn on Lake Constance ; † October 12, 1910 in Strasbourg , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine ) was a German bacteriologist, hygienist. and nutritional physiologist.

Life

Josef Forster studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he heard from Max von Pettenkofer . In 1864 he became active in the Corps Suevia Munich . As an inactive , he moved to the University of Leipzig . In 1868 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. During the Franco-Prussian War he served as a battalion doctor in the Royal Bavarian 12th Infantry Regiment "Prince Arnulf" . He qualified as a professor for hygiene in Munich in 1874 and became a private lecturer . At the end of 1878 he was appointed professor and director of the newly established Hygienic Institute in the Universiteit van Amsterdam . In 1896 he moved to the chair for hygiene and bacteriology at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . There he was director of the new hygienic-bacteriological institute. In 1898 he received his doctorate from the University of Edinburgh to the Doctor of Laws . For the academic year 1903/04 he was elected rector of the University of Strasbourg. In his rectorate speech he dealt with bacteriology and hygiene .

Forster worked experimentally in the areas of human nutrition, food hygiene and domestic hygiene. In 1873 he published his experiments, in which he had found that dogs and pigeons fed salt-free died after a few. In 1901 in Strasbourg he spoke about food on Wilhelm II's birthday . Since 1883 he edited the Archive for Hygiene with Max von Pettenkofer and Franz Adolf Hofmann .
