Josef Fulko Groner OP (* May 7, 1915 in Pfullendorf , Baden ; † December 18, 1997 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a Dominican , Catholic moral theologian and social philosopher, who was considered the nestor of Catholic social teaching .

Life

After graduating from the Bertoltsgymnasium in Freiburg im Breisgau , he entered the Dominican order in 1936 . He began his philosophical studies in 1937 at the Dominican General Studies in Walberberg / Bonn . There Arthur F. Utz and he met for the first time, Arthur F. Utz held the lectures on philosophy ( metaphysics ) there. Since then both have accompanied each other.

During the war he was the parish administrator of the Catholic parish of Oberkirch for two years . The respect and thanks of this community bear witness to the pastoral qualities of the young priest. He later demonstrated his talent as a preacher in his Sunday speeches at Radio Beromünster . He was really deeply a pastor who shared the concerns of the people who entrusted themselves to him.

After the war he did his doctorate with Theodor Müncker at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in moral theology with a dissertation on the great Thomas student Cajetan with summa cum laude . Since the theological faculty of Friborg was looking for a moral theologian in 1949, attention naturally fell on Josef Groner, who was highly valued and recommended by his doctoral supervisor, Müncker. The choice was a good one, although it actually did not suit the chair candidate Groner. He was a passionate pastor, but could not hide his scientific qualities, as he demonstrated in the historical and theologically oriented publication on Cajetan. So he came to Friborg with a heavy heart, so to speak . During these years from 1947 until shortly before his death, Groner and Utz worked together.

Since the editors of the Deutsche Thomasausgabe had trouble finding suitable editors for those volumes dealing with moral theology, they were naturally glad to see Professor Groner. During that time he published three volumes, for which he not only wrote the notes and commentary, but also took over the translation.

He was not the man for "big throws" in philosophical and theological speculation. But because of his basic historical tendency, he was a solid arranger of historically significant works. This solid scientific method also motivated him to work on Arthur F. Utz's Thomas volumes. Due to a heart condition, he gave up his academic teaching position in 1975.

He was a member of the Catholic student union Carolingia-Friborg in the KV .

Honors

On May 7, 1990, the day of his 75th birthday, Groner was made an honorary citizen of the city of Pfullendorf. As a gift, the then mayor Hartmuth Dinter presented him with a painting by the painter and later honorary citizen Sigurd Lange , which shows a view of Pfullendorf.
