Josef Huber (Canon Lawyer)

Josef Huber (born June 23, 1935 in Oberkirch , Baden ; † November 9, 2018 in Bad Hersfeld ) was a German clergyman and canon lawyer . From 1992 to 2010 he was a judge at the Rota Romana .

Life

Josef Huber studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Mainz and Freiburg in Üechtland . On February 25, 1961, he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Mainz . After the chaplaincy in Mainz-Kastel, he was sub-rector of the Episcopal Konvikt in Mainz from 1963 to 1965, head of the Spanish Mission in Mainz and religion teacher at the evening grammar school and at the Ketteler College in Mainz . After completing his doctoral studies, he received his doctorate in canon law (Dr. iur. Can.) In 1971 at the Pontifical Gregorian University with a thesis on the marriage consensus in Roman law . From 1969 to 1975 he was a spouse defender at the Mainz official office and temporary assistant in the cathedral parish. From 1975 to 1992 he was pastor in St. Peter and Paul in Bingen-Dromersheim as well as vice-official at the Mainz diocesan court and from 1978 to 1992 lecturer for canon law at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Mainz .

In 1992 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as a judge ( auditor ) at the Roman Rota, the second highest court of the Catholic Church. He was a representative of the German-speaking area in the judges' college of the Rota Romana, which mainly deals with questions relating to the cancellation of Catholic marriages . Huber was President of the Disciplinary Commission and Judge at the Appeals Court of the Vatican State and Commissioner at the Congregation for the Sacraments . He was also a professor at Studio Rotale and lecturer at the Universities of Gregoriana and Santa Croce .

Huber retired in 2010. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Markus Graulich as Huber's successor on December 30, 2011. Josef Huber was appointed ecclesiastical councilor and monsignor . Huber published over 100 scientific articles.
