Joseph Weil , from 1874 Weil Ritter von Weilen , (often also Josef ; * December 28, 1828 in Tetin near Prague , † July 3, 1889 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Weilen came from a poor background, from a Jewish family. With the support of wealthy relatives, he was able to attend high school in Prague. There, however, he did not bring the desired performance. Instead of returning to his homeland, he fled with a group of actors and went through several years of traveling. In 1848 he reappears in Laibach . There his play The Revolution of February 24th in Paris or Ludwig Philipp König von France will be performed. He was imprisoned in the unrest of 1848 , but was accepted into the army. There he quickly passed the lower ranks and was promoted to officer in December 1849 . The young officer was favored by his superiors. In 1852 he became a first lieutenant teacher of history and geography at the Hainburg cadet school . In 1854 he followed a call as a professor of history at the genius academy in Znojmo .

Weilen became a scriptor at the court library in Vienna in 1861 and left the military. During this time he also expanded his literary work. He worked at the library until 1873. In 1862 he also received a professorship at the kuk war school . He also became a teacher at the Vienna Conservatory . At this institution he founded a drama school with Salomon Hermann Mosenthal , of which he was director from 1873. In 1883 he became president of the Concordia journalists and writers' association and in 1884 he became editor-in-chief of the German editorial team of the so-called Kronprinzenwerk , an encyclopedia in 24 volumes. During this time he also received the title of court counselor .

He married Marie Eyermann (born August 13, 1842) in Vienna in 1861 . The couple had two sons:
