Josef Wilhelm Freiherr von Löschner (born May 7, 1809 in Kaaden as Joseph Franz Löschner ; † April 19, 1888 in Welchau ) was an Austrian physician, rector of Charles University in Prague and imperial personal physician .

Life

Löschner was born in Kaaden in 1809 as the son of the citizen and master miller Franz Löschner († May 1, 1811 in Kaaden) and his wife Katharina Lenz. After attending grammar school in Kaaden and Komotau , Löschner began studying medicine in Prague . In 1834 he was awarded a Dr. med. doctorate and received a professorship at the medical faculty of Charles University, whose rector he was from 1862 to 1863.

Löschner, who had been the bearer of the Franz Joseph Order since 1850 , was appointed State Medical Councilor in 1862 and in 1865 as court councilor to Emperor Franz Joseph I's personal doctor. In 1868 he retired due to an eye disease and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Stephen by the Emperor . In 1870 Löschner was made a baron . In 1888 he died at Welchau Castle.

Löschner made particular merits as a spa doctor who promoted the drinking cure and the Bohemian spa medicine. Among other things, he is credited with having made a significant contribution to the fame of the spa Karlsbad and the spa town of Bilin. In 1859 he also published a publication on the Bilin Sauerbrunnen , with which he was the first to treat the baths in the health resort of Bilin.

The Franz Joseph Children's Hospital in Prague was created by a Löschner foundation .

Honors

He is an honorary citizen of the health resort Kyselka , namesake of the local Löschner spring and a bust at the Jindřichův dvůr health resort was erected there in his honor. A central square in the town of Kadaň is named after Josef von Löschner.
