Josef von Smola (officer, 1805)

Josef Freiherr von Smola (born November 16, 1805 in Vienna , † June 29, 1856 in Lyon , France) was an Austrian officer .

Life

Josef von Smola, whose father Josef von Smola was also an officer, was initially trained at the Theresian Knight Academy in Vienna and joined the Bombardier Corps in 1820. He also studied chemistry and physics at the University of Vienna and at the Polytechnic Institute , also in Vienna. Promoted to lieutenant in 1824 , Smola became a teacher at the artillery school in 1826 , battery commander in 1831 and, in 1832, as successor to his brother Karl von Smola, adjutant to Theodor Baillet von Latour in Frankfurt . He was then on a shooting attempt detachment on the Adriatic. In 1840 he was promoted to captain and company commander in the Bombardier Corps.

In 1848, Smola, who had been promoted to major, was brought to the presidential office of the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry by Latour . He was one of those who tried to save the life of the Austro-Hungarian War Minister Latour , who was murdered on October 6, 1848 .

Under Field Marshal Alfred Fürst zu Windisch-Graetz , he took part in the campaign against the Hungarians. Later he was head of the detailed office under Feldzeugmeister Haynau . In 1849 he was promoted to colonel and assigned to the General Artillery Directorate and commander of the Weapons Administration District in Vienna, where he assisted Feldzeugmeister Augustin in the unification of the Vienna artillery establishments in the newly built arsenal . In 1851 he was artillery director in Prague and in 1852 in Vienna and then in Galicia . In the meantime he was promoted to major general and became holder of the field artillery regiment 8. From 1855 he was president of the artillery committee.

He died in Lyon on a study tour through Belgium, England and France.
