Josep "Pep" Clotet Ruiz (born April 28, 1977 in Igualada ) is a Spanish football coach . Initially mainly active in Spanish youth football, from 2010 he mainly worked in Northern European and English professional football.

Career

Clotet played football in his youth, after an injury at the age of 18 he started his coaching career as a youth coach in Catalan football. While he was studying football academically and advancing his coaching education, he was in charge of the youth teams of CF Iguala , UD Cornella and, from 2004, Espanyol Barcelona . In 2006 he won the Catalan championship with the club's U-18 team. As a result, he was briefly the head coach of the lower-class UE Figueres . He then took over the management of coach training in the Catalan regional association, while from 2007 he was again involved as a youth coach in the youth department of Espanyol Barcelona. With the U-19 team, he won the national junior championship in 2008 and was subsequently promoted to head coach of the club's second team. With this he got on the end of season from the Tercera División in the third-rate Segunda División B on.

In January 2010, the Swedish club Malmö FF hired Clotet as assistant coach to Roland Nilsson . With the team around Daniel Larsson , Agon Mehmeti , Johan Dahlin , Guillermo Molins and Ulrich Vinzents , he won the Swedish championship title at the end of the season. After the end of the season he received an offer from league competitor Halmstads BK to cover the post of head coach, which he accepted in early December. Under his leadership, the club slipped to the bottom of the table. After only one win in 15 games by the halfway point of the season, the club dismissed him in early July 2011 and replaced him with Jens Gustafsson .

The Norwegian club Viking FK hired Clotet as a coach in October 2011, as the previous head coach Åge Hareide took over a managerial role based on the English model. After the club replaced Hareide with Kjell Jonevret in June 2012 , he decided to say goodbye. He left Northern Europe and returned to Spain, where he tied himself in July of that year for the coming season as a coach at Atlético Malagueño , the reserve team of Málaga FC , in the fourth-rate Tercera Division.

In November 2013, the Welsh club Swansea City Clotet for its junior academy. After separating from Michael Laudrup in February 2014, Garry Monk temporarily took over as coach in the Premier League , when he was signed in May with a three-year contract, Clotet, who had been supporting him since February, officially moved up as his assistant. In December 2015, he and his boss were fired. When he hired Leeds United in the summer of 2016 , he followed again as an assistant coach. After Monk left the club in the summer of 2017, Thomas Christiansen, a fellow countryman from Clotet , took over as coach at Leeds United. However, the Spaniard brought his main assistant with Julio Bañuelos . Thereupon Clotet asked for the termination of his contract.

Clotet signed on at Oxford United as head coach, as previous coach Michael Appleton had left the club as an assistant to Craig Shakespeare for Leicester City . After twelve wins in 36 games, he was released in January 2018. A few weeks later he rejoined Monk's coaching team, who had meanwhile worked for Birmingham City . After Monk's dismissal in mid-June 2019, under whose responsibility the club ended the second division season 2918/19 after deducting nine points only in 17th place in the table, he became his interim successor. In early December 2019, he was finally confirmed as permanent head coach. After match operations were suspended from March to June due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it was announced before it resumed at the beginning of June 2020 that Clotet would be leaving the club at the end of the season. Already on July 8, 2020, four match days before the end of the season, the coach and club parted ways prematurely "in mutual consultation" after no win had been achieved in the previous ten league games.
