Joseph Anton von Pilat

Joseph Anton Pilat , from 1831 Edler von Pilat , ( pseudonym : Aristide ; * February 20, 1782 in Augsburg , † May 2, 1865 in Vienna ) was a German publicist .

Life

Career

After completing school at the Jesuit College St. Salvator in Augsburg , he studied law at the University of Göttingen .

In 1803 he became the private secretary of Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich , who was ambassador to the Prussian court in Berlin at the time . In the following years he accompanied him on his further stations: 1806 to Paris and 1809 to Vienna .

In 1811 Metternich entrusted him with the management of the Oesterreichischer Beobachter (daily newspaper) after Friedrich Schlegel had been removed from the editor. He held this position until 1848.

In 1818 he was appointed real secretary of the Imperial and Royal Court, later a government councilor in extraordinary service at the State Chancellery.

Pilat was close friends with Adam Müller and Friedrich von Gentz .

The devout Catholic was in lively contact with Zacharias Werner , Johann Smidt and Klemens Maria Hofbauer and was their liaison in politics.

On May 4, 1805, he married Elise Dorothea von Mengershausen in Berlin.

The marriage resulted in three sons and three daughters.

Awards

In 1818 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, third class.

He was also awarded the gold civil honor cross.

On July 20, 1831 he was raised to the Austrian nobility.
