Joseph Bernhard Jack

Joseph Bernhard Jack (born March 22, 1818 in Salem , Grand Duchy of Baden , † August 14, 1901 in Constance ) was a German pharmacist and botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " JBJack ".

Life

After attending elementary school and learning Latin and Greek, he began his apprenticeship in 1833 in F. Baur's pharmacy in Salem. He completed this in 1837. He then conditioned in Donaueschingen , Lenzburg and Geneva . From Geneva he made a trip to Paris in 1841 to study pharmacy in Freiburg . In 1842 he passed the state examination.

From 1845 Jack leased the farm pharmacy in Salem, which he ran for two years. Then he moved to Constance and devoted himself entirely to botanical studies. Jack went on botanical excursions every year for a long time, especially to Switzerland, and was one of the first to know about European liverworts . He was involved in many editions of various Exsiccaten works and authored critical studies of Hepatica species. The large liverwort herbarium that he had set up became the property of the Boissier Herbarium .

Honors

In 1877 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From the University of Freiburg he was awarded a Dr. hc and Viktor Ferdinand Schiffner named the liverwort genus Jackiella after him in 1900 .
