Joseph Robert Cistone (born May 18, 1949 in Philadelphia - † October 16, 2018 in Saginaw , Michigan ) was an American clergyman and bishop of Saginaw .

Life

Joseph Cistone studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. The Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia , Cardinal John Joseph Krol , ordained him a priest on May 17, 1975 . He was active in pastoral care , from 1980 at the diocesan court. In 1991 he became Regens at the seminary. From 1998 to 2009 he was vicar general .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia and titular bishop of Casae Medianae on June 8, 2004 . The Archbishop of Philadelphia, Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali , donated him episcopal ordination on June 7 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Philadelphia Robert Patrick Maginnis and Michael Francis Burbidge .

On May 20, 2009 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Bishop of Saginaw and inducted into office on July 28 of the same year.

According to Catholic media, in 2012 Cistone was charged with deceiving a jury about his alleged involvement in the destruction of documents in Philadelphia in the 1990s containing names of potential clergy perpetrators in cases of sexual abuse . There was no conviction. In February 2018, Bishop Cistone announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. The following March he hit the headlines for a police search of his home and other church rooms. He was accused of failing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in two cases of abuse by priests in his diocese. However, no indications of possible cover-ups were found during the house search .
