Robert James Carlson (born June 30, 1944 in Minneapolis ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Saint Louis .

Life

Robert James Carlson was born to Robert and Jeanne Carlson, the first of five children. Four girls were born after Robert James, two of whom died early. At school he was tutored by Christian Brothers and played American football . He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Saint Paul's Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota .

Carlson was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis on May 23, 1970 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on November 19, 1983 auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and titular bishop of Avioccala . The Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, John Robert Roach , then consecrated him on January 11, 1984 as bishop; Co- consecrators were John Francis Kinney , Bishop of Bismarck , and the Bishop of Sioux Falls , Paul Vincent Dudley . On January 13, 1994, he was appointed coadjutor of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, and on March 21, 1995, Carlson succeeded Paul Vincent Dudley as Bishop of Sioux Falls.

Pope John Paul II called him Bishop of Saginaw on December 29, 2004 ; the enthronement took place on February 24, 2005. On April 21, 2009 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of Saint Louis. The inauguration took place on June 10, 2009.

On June 10, 2020, Pope Francis accepted Robert James Carlson's resignation due to reasons of age.

Health problems

Carlson suffered from severe cancer and was able to fight G4 cancer in the 1990s. He owes this to seven cancer treatments and, according to him, a pilgrimage to the altar of the Virgin Mary in Fátima .
