Joseph von Auffenberg

Joseph Freiherr von Auffenberg (born August 25, 1798 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † December 25, 1857 there ) was a German playwright and poet .

Life

Joseph von Auffenberg studied law at the University of Freiburg from 1813 and took part in the battle of Waterloo in 1815 in Austrian service . Later von Auffenberg was a lieutenant in the Baden Guard in Karlsruhe .

His plays Pizarro and Die Spartaner were performed in Karlsruhe. The success inspired him to write more dramas. Auffenberg became a member of the court theater committee in 1822 and soon after became its president. In 1832 he undertook a trip to Spain that he described as a humorous pilgrimage to Granada and Cordoba , on which he was attacked by robbers near Valencia and survived seriously injured.

In 1839, Auffenberg was appointed court marshal of the Grand Duke of Baden .

Auffenberg lost all of his positions in 1849 due to a faux pas he had committed at a dinner for Grand Duke Leopold von Baden . Apparently he mimicked the Grand Duke while drunk behind his back, but was caught and suspended by him. Auffenberg then moved to his hometown Freiburg im Breisgau and lived with a servant in a house on Kaiserstraße (today's Kaiser-Joseph-Straße ). There have been many rumors about his life in recent years, as Auffenberg was seen wearing allegedly “defective clothing” in dirty inns - always accompanied by a black poodle. The assumption that Auffenberg was already impoverished during his lifetime was refuted after his death: he bequeathed 39,000 guilders to the hospital at Valencia del Cid, where he was nursed to health in 1832 after the robbery. He also bequeathed 1,000 guilders to his loyal companion of recent years, his poodle.

His grave is in the old cemetery in Freiburg . Next to the completely weathered tombstone, which was created by Josef Alois Knittel , there is a memorial that was created in 1965 by the Freiburg sculptor Eva Eisenlohr .
