content

The petty criminals Junior, Coco, Lizard and Ruben finally want to turn the big thing and kidnap Ben Dyson, the wealthy owner of a computer company. They want to extort four million dollars for his release. In the course of this kidnapping, Patty Hornbeck, the wife of a senator , is shot by Coco when she suddenly appears in the stairwell and becomes an unwanted witness. As it turns out in the course of the investigation, the dead woman was the kidnap victim's lover. Now the four gangsters are wanted not only for the kidnapping, but also for the murder. The kidnappers hide in an abandoned church. Coco and Junior imagine how they could use the money to make their dream of living on Margarita Island come true.

Although this case is actually highly explosive, only two detectives are put on him. Matty Grimes, who would normally be in charge of processing, reported incapacitated with a broken leg. His representative will be his wife's alcoholic ex-husband, David Friedman. He is reluctant to take over the case and initially tries constantly to get rid of it, because he soon suspects that this is not just about ransom. Working with Sadie Hawkins, the FBI agent assigned to him as a partner, also proves difficult at first. After Friedman suspects that Grimes' leg is not broken at all, he visits his colleague at home and uses a lot of unorthodox methods to force him to admit that on the one hand he is not sick and on the other hand has tapped the senator's wife's phone.

The kidnappers play cat and mouse with the two policemen and lure their victim's accountant with the ransom from one place to another by telephone and finally out of town by train. There the money is taken over and the case is surprisingly partially resolved. Ruben Rubenbauer is shot dead by his colleague in the car. It turns out that Junior acted on behalf of the Senator, who has long since known his wife cheated on Dyson. When he learns from Junior that he has got the money, he sends a killer to the church, in which only Coco, Lizard and Dyson are. Hawkins and Friedman, who follow the killer's car, have an accident with their car and are injured and have to give up the chase. The killer shoots the Lizard - Coco had gone to an outhouse to rally after her Juniors deception became clear. The killer tortures Dyson while the senator listens and gives instructions over a telephone circuit. When the killer is about to shoot Dyson, he in turn is shot by Coco. This lets Dyson notify the police. Dyson, in turn, lets them flee. Since Friedman and Hawkins had an accident nearby, they are at the scene in time to prevent Grimes from entering the building and covering up tracks.

Three months later, Coco meets Junior on Margarita Island. After bringing him a drink, she shoots him and takes his keys.

criticism

“After an original opening credits, a one-dimensional thriller develops about love and deception and the longing for big money, which one has often seen better. The only interesting thing is the top-class cast, which upgrades the rather weak plot a lot. "

Awards and nominations

  • 1999: Cognac Festival du Film Policier: Sebastian Gutierrez received the Critics' Prize
  • 1999: Paris Film Festival: Nomination for Sebastian Gutierrez for the Grand Prix

Others

The age rating is set at 16 because of the partially adult conversations, the brutality and the many sex scenes between Coco and Junior.
