Judith (first name)
Judith is a female given name .
Origin and meaning of the name
The name comes from the Hebrew (יהודית Jehudit ) and means woman of Judea .
The book of Judith of the Bible's Apocrypha describes how Holofernes , the chief captain of Nebuchadnezzar , king of Assyria , wages war against the Israelites . Judit, a very devout widow, calls for resistance, although all other peoples have already submitted. Finally she goes with her maid, under the pretext, the Hebrewsto want to betray, to Holofernes and thus wins his trust. Holofernes gets drunk at a party, and Judit uses this opportunity to cut off his head with his own sword in his sleep. Hiding her head in a sack, she flees the Assyrian camp. Leaving their captain dead, the Assyrians are defeated by the attacking Israelites.
