biography
Julia Grünwald comes from Rußbach in the state of Salzburg . She attended the ski hotel management school and the higher education institute for tourism in Bad Hofgastein , where she graduated in 2011. In January 2008 she took part in FIS races for the first time, and celebrated her first victory on December 7, 2009 in a slalom in Sölden . After further good results in FIS races, she was accepted into the B-team of the Austrian Ski Association in 2010. After she suffered a broken ankle in December 2010 and had to take a seven-week break, she started in the European Cup from February 2011 . She was able to place in the points from the start and reached her first podium on March 11th as second in the giant slalom in La Molina . Initially, this was by far her best European Cup result, but she will not achieve further top 10 placements until the 2012/2013 season.
On December 29, 2011, Grünwald made her first start in the World Cup in the Lienz slalom , but was eliminated in the first round. In the following two winters, Grünwald hardly had any notable successes. That changed at the beginning of winter 2014/15 when she won a European Cup race for the first time in Hemsedal . On December 29, 2014, she was 14th in the Kühtai slalom, winning World Cup points for the first time. She achieved her best World Cup result with a tenth place in the Flachau slalom on January 15, 2016. She finished 25th in the discipline classification this season. In March 2017 she was crowned Austrian slalom champion at Hochkar .
On May 7, 2018, she announced her retirement from competitive sports due to knee problems.
