Júlio Prestes de Albuquerque (born March 15, 1882 in Itapetininga , † February 9, 1946 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian politician and President-elect of Brazil .

Júlio Prestes was one of nine sons of the politician and former governor of the state of São Paulo Fernando Prestes de Albuquerque (1855-1937) and Olimpia Santana. In 1901 he entered the Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo and completed his law studies in 1906 as a lawyer.

His political career began when he joined the Partido Republicano Paulista (PRP), his father's party, for which he was elected to the legislative assembly of the state of São Paulo as a member of the state. He held this mandate from 1909 to 1923. From 1924 to 1927 he was a federal member of his home state in the Chamber of Deputies of the Brazilian National Congress .

From July 17, 1927 to May 21, 1930 he was the 13th governor of the state of São Paulo. On March 1, 1930, he was elected President of Brazil with 1,091,709 out of 1,890,524 votes. Júlio Prestes was never able to exercise his office because the revolution of October 1930 deposed his predecessor Washington Luís Pereira de Sousa by means of a coup and handed over power to Getúlio Dornelles Vargas on November 3, 1930 . With him ends the República Velha , which has existed since the fall of the monarchy in 1889. Until 1934 he lived in exile in Portugal . After his return he devoted himself to his estate. Only after the fall of Getúlio Vargas in 1945 and the political liberalization did he return to politics and co-founded the União Democrática Nacional (UDN). He died a year later.
