Julius Asal

Julius Friedrich Asal (born February 12, 1997 in Bad Homburg ) is a German pianist .

Life

The son of a pianist and a clarinetist began playing the piano at the age of three by playing what he had heard on the instrument himself. He received his first lessons at the age of eight from Sibylle Cada in Frankfurt am Main . In 2006 Julius Asal won 1st prize and special prize at the Mendelssohn Competition for young pianists and strings .

From 2007 to 2013 he was directed by Wolfgang Hess to Dr. Hoch's Conservatory . In 2008 and 2010 he won the Dr. Annemarie Schlueter Competition , in 2009 he was awarded 1st prize at the Goldene Taste piano competition . In 2013 he became a young student of Oliver Kern at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and won the Lions Music Prize . In 2015 Asal was awarded the Steinway Prize and nominated as a representative of his university for the German University Competition , from which he emerged as a finalist. In the same year he graduated from high school with a focus on German and French.

Since 2017 Julius Asal has continued his pianistic training with Eldar Nebolsin at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin . In 2017 he was a finalist of the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano and one week later he won first prize in the European Auditions of Young Concert Artists . In 2019 he received a special prize at the Sound and Explanation competition in the SWR Studio Kaiserslautern and in August of the same year won the silver medal at the Palma d'Oro International Piano Competition in Italy .

Julius Asal was a soloist a. a. the German Radio Philharmonic , the Brandenburg State Orchestra , the St. Andrew Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra Frankfurt Soloists. His path also led him to international music festivals such as the Rheingau Music Festival , the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Oxford Piano Festival and the Weilburg Palace Concerts . He has performed in concert halls such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt , the Merkin Concert Hall New York , the Wiener Musikverein , the Stockbridge Parish Church Edinburgh , the broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk and the Beethovenhaus Bonn . In November 2019 he played in front of the former Federal President Joachim Gauck in Berlin .

In addition to his concert activities, the pianist focuses on lecture concerts and readings. He designed programs such as “Robert Schumann - About Intimacy and Ambivalence” and “Büchner meets Ravel - Lenz and the Gaspard de la nuit”. On behalf of the Hessian Ministry of Culture , he gave a lecture on the subject of "Access to education through improvisation - musical reorientation as a philosophy of life".

Asal was artistically enriched by encounters with musicians such as Sir András Schiff , Christoph Eschenbach , Richard Goode , Menahem Pressler , Tabea Zimmermann , Marios Papadopoulos and Boris Berezovsky .

Julius Asal is the founder of the Arcon Trio, which has existed since 2012 and with which he received the Polytechnic Society's sponsorship award in 2015 . In 2018, the ensemble won 2nd prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition and was also awarded two special prizes, which made debut concerts at the Wiener Musikverein and in Poland possible. In 2019 the trio played the world premiere of “Toccata” by Holmer Becker .

Asal lives in Berlin and has a younger brother who is a drummer. His grandmother is the German-British pop singer Cindy Ellis .
