Julius Brecht

Julius Brecht (* 8. February 1900 in Ühlingen ; † 10. July 1962 in Cologne ) was a German politician of the SPD .

Life

After a bank apprenticeship and his first job, Brecht was first authorized signatory and later director of the housing company Westfälische Heimstätte in Münster from 1927 . In 1935 he moved to the Saarland Homestead in the same position . In 1938 he became head of the Reich Association of German Charitable Housing in Berlin. From 1947 to 1951 he was director of the Association of North German Housing Companies in Hamburg-Altona. In 1951 he became director of the general association of non-profit housing companies. In addition, he was a lecturer at the University of Cologne and President of the Society for Public Economy.

On the initiative of Julius Brecht, a fund was set up from which advanced training measures for young executives in the housing industry are being promoted today. Since 2004, the Julius Brecht Summer Academy has been held at the EBZ Business School , the European training center for the housing and real estate industry, together with the GdW Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies in Bochum , in order to train young executives with well-known speakers.

In 1937 Julius Brecht joined the NSDAP ( membership number 5,288,982). From 1949 to 1953, Brecht, who joined the SPD in 1947, was a member of the Hamburg parliament .

Brecht was a member of the German Bundestag from 1957 until his death. During his membership he was deputy chairman of the Bundestag committee for housing, building and land law.

Brecht died in 1962 at the age of 62. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. J).

Street renaming

The proposal to rename a street in Hanover because of its membership in the NSDAP has not yet been implemented.

A street named after Julius Brecht in Freiburg im Breisgau since 1965 was renamed Martha-Walz-Birrer- Strasse after the honorary citizen of Freiburg in July 2019 following the recommendation of a commission of experts to review Freiburg street names .
