Ernst Eduard Christian Friedrich Julius Freytag (* 1835 in Celle ; † 1926 in Ilfeld ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and pastor , author, publisher and editor-in-chief of Christian papers, founder and head of the St. Stephen's Foundation .

Life

Julius Freytag was born in Celle at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover as the son of pastor Johann Andreas Freytag.

After Freytag had worked as a pastor on a rehearsal at the Kreuzkirche in Hanover until 1866, he was active as a pastor at the Evangelical Association, the forerunner of the State Association for Inner Mission , from 1866 until the founding of the German Empire . This had already been founded in 1865 with the support of the senior consistorial council and later abbot of Loccum monastery , Gerhard Uhlhorn . His representatives and thought leaders included the Hanoverian Minister of State Karl Lichtenberg , Julius Freytag and the pastor Ludolf Adolf Petri . Freytag was also a member of the directors of the Hanover Whitsun Conference initiated by Petri .

In 1868, the Evangelical Association of Hanover decided to set up a “brotherhood” for the training of men (brothers) for the service of Christian charity: In the following year, Julius Freytag started the diaconal work with 6 helpers , from which the Stephansstift was to develop. On the occasion of the founding anniversary, the annual feast of the St. Stephen's Foundation has been celebrated on Ascension Day.

Julius Freytag, initially with the address Breite Straße 6 in Hanover, was the author, editor and publisher of the magazine Hannoversches Sonntagsblatt, which appeared from 1867 and was reproduced in the Schlüterschen Hofbuchdruckerei . Volksblatt for Inner Mission . With the net profit Freytag supported the Evangelical Association. In 1869 - with Freytag as editor-in-chief - the newspaper Hannoverscher Volkskalender was added, the proceeds of which flowed into the necessary financing of the Stephansstift.

Pastor Freytag, who is also the head of the monastery, and his budding deacons were only able to move into the current location of the Stephansstift between Kirchröder Strasse and Eilenriede in Kleefeld , however, only after the industrial consul Schwemann donated land and acquired neighboring properties. At Michaelmas 1872 they moved into the finished "[...] neat main house", which also had other rooms. Shortly before that, the clergyman Ludolf Wilhelm Fricke had initially been appointed as a senior helper in the Stephansstift, but he became Freytag's successor in the post of headmaster on November 2, 1873.

From 1883 Freytag went to Langenholtensen , where he worked as a pastor until 1890. From there he moved to Ilfeld in 1890, where he again worked as a pastor until his retirement in 1908. Ilfeld remained Freytag's residence until his death in 1926.
