Julius Kronberg (* 1850 in Karlskrona ; † October 17, 1921 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter and professor at the Stockholm Art Academy . Kronberg decorated many buildings, his works are exhibited in the Swedish National Museum , among others . He is one of the most outstanding Swedish artists between 1870 and 1920.

biography

Julius Kronberg was born in Karlskrona in 1850. At the age of fourteen he was accepted into the art academy in Stockholm and trained there during the 1860s. A travel grant took him through Copenhagen , Düsseldorf , where he was a private student of Edvard Perséus , and Paris through Europe . He also spent a long time in Munich , where he focused his studies on decorative painting, before settling in Rome in 1877 . Kronberg met several Nordic artists and writers in Munich and Rome, including Henrik Ibsen .

In 1889, Kronberg had a studio built in Stockholm in northern Djurgården according to his own specifications. From 1895 to 1898 he was a professor at the Stockholm Art Academy. After his death in Stockholm in 1921, his studio was given to the Nordic Museum and, at the instigation of his friend Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, finally given to the Skansen Foundation in Stockholm.

Motives, style and inspiration

Kronberg often painted figures from mythological motifs, for example the Bible or works by William Shakespeare . He was inspired by Rubens and Titian , among others , as well as by painting in Munich. During his time in Rome he was inspired by Tiepolo, among others .

The painting Jaktnymf och fauner made him known to a wider audience when it was exhibited in the National Museum in 1876. It was a sensation due to the unusual motif for its time and people flocked in thousands to see it. The picture was very much appreciated by August Strindberg , among others , who reviewed it in Dagens Nyheter with the words: “Fall ned och tillbed måleriets triumfator! - Kneel down and worship the triumphant painting! "

His largest public commissions include the three ceiling paintings for the Stockholm Palace (1891-1893) and ceiling paintings for the Dramaten (1906-1908). Kronberg also made a large number of paintings for Hallwylska Palace in Stockholm. Kronberg also painted the ceiling of Jesus' life in the Adolf Friedrich Church on Norrmalm in Stockholm.

A painting that is still well known today is David and Saul . It was created in Rome and impresses above all with its composition and as an example of spectacular salon painting . In terms of color, it looks rather muted.

Kronberg also made a famous portrait of Henrik Ibsen .
