biography

Winge's father was the rector and vicar Isak Martin Winge. Winge obtained his Abitur in Uppsala in 1846 and then became a student with the decorative painter PE Wallander in Stockholm. In 1847 he enrolled at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan . In addition to his studies, he made a living as a postal worker and by selling portraits . Wye's interest in legends about the Scandinavian prehistory was aroused by his parents' house . His drawings on this topic received a lot of attention in his environment. Among other things, he designed illustrations for Adam Oehlenschläger's work Nordensguder and for Crown Prince Karl's poem Fosterbröderna . Together with his college friend August Malmström , Winge turned to a Swedish variant of symbolism .
In 1856 Winge became a student of Johan Christoffer Boklund in the new painting school of the art academy. The following year he received a royal medal for his work Karl X. Gustav on the death bed from Axel Oxenstierna . Winge received a scholarship that enabled him to go on a study trip via Düsseldorf to Paris , where he copied paintings by Peter Paul Rubens at the Louvre . On the way back he reached Rome in 1859 before returning to Sweden in 1863.
In 1864 Winge was elected to the art academy and after various teaching assignments he received the title of professor a short time later. In 1865 he opened his own painting school in his studio. Winge undertook a second trip to Italy in 1877, which gave him a great deal of inspiration.
