Julius Opel

Julius Otto Opel (born July 17, 1829 in Loitzschütz , † February 17, 1895 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German educator and historian .

Life

Opel was the son of a country cantor . From 1841 he attended the Stiftsgymnasium in Zeitz and then from 1849 to 1853 the University of Halle . On July 30, 1853, he received his diploma as a candidate for a school office and was then able to complete a probationary year in Merseburg . From 1854 to 1856 he was a full teacher at the Higher Citizens School in Lübben and from 1856 a collaborator at the Latin School of the Francke Foundations in Halle.

Opel switched to the city of Halle in 1864. He became rector of the municipal preschool, which prepared children of wealthy parents for high school and secondary school. With the integration of this pre-school into the city ​​high school in Halle in 1868, he became a full senior teacher at this school. The Philosophical Faculty of the University of Halle awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1867 . On his retirement he received the Red Eagle Order IV class.

Opel was a long-time member of the Thuringian-Saxon History Association and its secretary from autumn 1862 to the beginning of 1893 . In addition, he was a member of the city ​​council in Halle from 1874 to the beginning of 1885 and also worked at the General German Biography (ADB).
