Yuri
Juri (or Yuri ) is both a Slavic male and an East Asian female given name .
Origin and meaning
The male first name comes from a Slavic variant of the first name Georg , which is mainly used in Russia ( Russian Юрий ), Ukraine ( Ukrainian Юрій ), the Sorbs ( Jurij ) and in the South Slavic region. Georg in turn comes from ancient Greek and means farmer / farmer. Joeri has also been a popular first name in the Dutch-speaking countries since the 1970s.
The female first name is common in Japan ( 百合 / ゆ り , ' lily ') and Korea ( 유리 ). However, this has a different meaning than the Slavic variant. Originally used as a male first name in Korea, it is now used more as a female first name in Japan. In Korean, the meaning depends on the Chinese spelling of the name, in Korean script it has the same spelling as "glass".
