from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yuri Walentinowitsch Kowaltschuk ( Russian Юрий Валентинович Ковальчук ; born July 25, 1951 in Leningrad , USSR ) is a Russian physicist , financial businessman, media mogul and billionaire. From 2005 to 2012 he was chairman of the board of directors of Saint Petersburg- based Rossija bank and has been chairman of the bank's shareholders' council since June 2012.

Life

Yuri Kovalchuk was born in 1951 as the son of the historian Valentin Kovalchuk in what was then Leningrad. He studied physics at the Leningrad State University until his graduation in 1974. From 1977 he worked as a scientist at the Joffe Physics-Technical Institute in Leningrad. In 1985, after successfully defending his dissertation, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. From 1988 to 1991 he then held the position of deputy director of the Physikalisch-Technische Institut Joffe. During the upheaval at the beginning of the 1990s, Kovalchuk was involved in various projects in Saint Petersburg, as the city has been called again since 1991, and also worked on behalf of Anatoly Sobchak , the mayor at the time. Kovalchuk's friendship with Vladimir Putin also stems from this period . On November 11, 1996, he and seven other people founded the dacha community "See" (Озеро) in the village of Solowjewka on the east bank of a lake on the Karelian Isthmus north of Saint Petersburg. The other founding members of this community today are such prominent figures as Vladimir Smirnov , Nikolai Shamalov , Vladimir Yakunin , Viktor Myachin , Andrei Fursenko , his brother Sergei Fursenko and, last but not least, Vladimir Putin himself.

In 2000, Kovalchuk was one of the founders of the "Center for Strategic Research 'Northwest'" foundation and has held a leading position there ever since.

In December 2000, Kovalchuk was awarded the Order of Friendship .

From 2005 to 2012 Yuri Kovalchuk was chairman of the board of directors of Bank Rossija , of which he is the largest single shareholder with over 37% shares, ahead of Nikolai Shamalov with 9.6 percent. Yuri Kovalchuk has been Chairman of the Bank's Shareholders' Council since 2012. Bank Rossija has owned the Sogaz insurance group since 2004 , which in turn has owned more than 75% of the shares in the closed joint stock company "Lider" (Russian: ЗАО «Лидер», Д. У. / English: CJSC Leader, DU) since 2006 . "Lider" manages more than 80 percent of the shares in the GAZFOND Group, the main shareholder of Gazprombank , in trust . As a result, Bank Rossija indirectly controls both Gazprombank and the Gazprom Media group. These entanglements determine the great influence of Kovalchuk as the main shareholder of Bank Rossija. The Gazprom Media Group includes the government-affiliated newspaper Izvestia , the television stations NTW and TNT and the radio station Echo Moskwy (66 percent share). The National Media Group (NMG), founded at the beginning of 2008, also belongs to the Rossija Group, and Alina Kabaeva has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors since September 2014 , after this function had previously been exercised by his nephew Kirill Kovalchuk, who then took over the chairmanship of management. The NMG includes the private television broadcaster Ren-TV, which used to be critical of the government (stake of 68 percent), the broadcaster " Petersburg-Fünfter Kanal " and a 25% minority stake in Erste Kanal .

Miscellaneous

In the May 2008 issue of Russian Forbes magazine , Kovalchuk appeared for the first time in the list of the 100 richest people in Russia, his fortune is estimated at $ 1.9 billion. Yuri Kovalchuk has been Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Thailand in Saint Petersburg since 1996 .

Kovalchuk has been on the US Treasury Department's sanctions list since March 2014 . In July 2014, the EU banned the two main shareholders of the Rossija Bank, Yuri Kovalchuk and Nikolai Shamalov , with entry bans and account blocks.

The physicist Mikhail Kovalchuk is Yuri Kovalchuk's older brother. He has been the director of the Kurchatov Institute since 2005 . His son Kirill Kowaltschuk (born 1968) has been the chairman of the management of the national media group NMG since September 2014 .
