Just Juel (born October 14, 1664 in Viborg , † August 8, 1715 in the naval battle near Jasmund ) was a Danish admiral and diplomat in the Great Northern War.

family

Just Juel was the son of Henrik Juel (1628–1707) from Lindbjærg and Sophie Høg . He was a grandson of Jens Juel (1594–1636). On December 29, 1702 he married Adele Bielke , a daughter of Admiral Christian Bielke . The marriage was short-lived; because Adele died on June 15, 1706.

career

Juel initially studied from 1680 to 1682 at the new Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He hoped for a career as a diplomat for the Crown Denmark-Norway in Germany. When his efforts failed, he turned to military service. In 1684 he toured the Republic of the Seven United Provinces . He joined the Royal Navy as an officer candidate and remained in the Dutch service for four years.

His relative, Admiral Niels Juel , appointed him lieutenant on his return to Denmark . He was first subordinate to Admiral Henrik Span . A little later he, like the future Admiral Peter Raben , sailed under Admiral von Stöcken to the Kingdom of Scotland . In 1690 he was appointed commander of the frigate Hvide Falk , which sank during a voyage to France. In 1693 he became the commandant of the ship of the line Lindormen .

When the Great Northern War broke out , Juel was the first flag captain of Admiral General Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve , the half-brother of Frederick IV (Denmark and Norway) . In 1704 Juel commanded the royal yacht. On a trip to Norway, Juel was promoted to Kommandør after arriving in Frederiksstad .

When Denmark found itself at war with Sweden again with the signing of the alliance treaty in Copenhagen in October 1709, the Danish king sent Juel to the court of Tsar Peter the Great . Until 1712 Juel worked as the Danish ambassador to Tsarist Russia . He wrote down his experiences in Russia in a diary. This was in 1893 under the title En Rejse til Rusland under tzar Peter. (A trip to Russia under Tsar Peter.) Published. The editor was the writer and historian Gerhard Leslie Grove .

Upon his return, Juel was made a vice admiral. During the sea battle at Jasmund, Juel and his ship were in the vanguard of the Danish fleet. Juel was struck by a cannonball and mortally wounded during the eight-hour naval battle. His body was recovered after the battle was over, transferred to Denmark and buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
