history

Kölle Zoo was founded in 1984 by Kurt Landes. Before that, Landes was a manager at a garden center in Stuttgart , where he set up a petting zoo in 1969. Shortly thereafter, a petting zoo followed in the Heilbronn branch of the garden center. Little by little, food and accessories were added to the range.

Over the years, the specialist pet departments became two independent pet shops, which Landes took over in 1979. From 1984 both shops then operated under the name "Kölle Zoo GmbH". In 1985, Landes opened another branch in Heilbronn . In 1991 the Kölle Zoo Stuttgart moved into a new building in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. In 1995 the two Heilbronn branches merged into a larger branch in new premises in Heilbronn-Böckingen . In 1998 a branch was opened in Karlsruhe .

In 2002, Landes withdrew from the operative business and handed over the management to Matthias Pohl. The following year, Kölle-Zoo started with a themed world concept and implemented this with a South Sea landscape when it opened in Ludwigshafen . Karlsruhe followed in 2004 with a South American jungle world and in 2005 Stuttgart with an Asian jungle landscape. In 2005 the Heilbronner Markt moved to the “Am Kayser's Turm” building. The following year, the Kölle Zoo opened in Münster, followed six months later by the sixth branch in Frankfurt. In 2008 the Kölle Zoo Markt opened in Heidelberg . Markets in Balingen , Villingen-Schwenningen , Weiterstadt and Weil am Rhein will follow in 2009 . The branch in Weil am Rhein was the first Kölle Zoo specialist store in a shopping center.

In 2011 Kölle Zoo opened a new branch in Munich , in 2012 in Nuremberg , and in 2014 in Würzburg . In 2015 the first own brand, "Lottis Häppchen", was launched. The namesake was Matthias Pohl's bitch "Lotti". In 2016, Kölle Zoo opened a market in Saarbrücken .

As of January 1, 2018, managing partner Matthias Pohl and managing director Ramin Danaei shared the management of the company. Kölle Zoo launched its online shop in November 2018.

In 2019, Kölle Zoo opens its seventeenth store in the Neckar Center in Esslingen and expanded to Austria, where five stores from the Fressnapf subsidiary Maxizoo were taken over and renamed Kölle Zoo Markt. These are located in Brunn am Gebirge , Klagenfurt , Linz- Leonding, Neu-Rum and Vienna .

Kölle Zoo cooperates with sanctuaries , animal shelters and animal welfare organizations. This includes not only financial support and the granting of discounts, but also sponsoring, food donations and the provision of rooms for conferences and events. The cooperation with the “Animal Shelter Heroes” campaign aims to improve the placement opportunities for animal shelter animals. For this purpose, animal shelters are presented on the company's homepage and customers are offered financial incentives for animal adoption. The Kölle Zoo in Esslingen also has a digital adoption center.
