Eil is a district in the southeast of Cologne , it is located in the district of Porz . At 16.25 square kilometers, Eil is the largest district in Cologne by area.

Local division

The center of Eil is located in the southwest of the town, with an extensive industrial area in the north. The east of the village includes large parts of the Wahner Heide nature reserve , the local recreation area around Gut Leidenhausen and the walled, non-publicly accessible area of Röttgen Castle .

History and Development

The first written mention of the village of Eil comes from the year 1268. The residents were very poor at that time and earned their living as day laborers on the neighboring manors of Röttgen and Leidenhausen .

Eil has belonged to the Porz office in the Duchy of Berg since the Middle Ages .

In the 19th century Eil was the largest town of the Heumar mayor, but it did not have its own parish. Between 1903 and 1905, St. Michael’s Church was built in neo-Gothic style based on designs by the Cologne architect Theodor Kremer . It was not until 1917 that Eil became its own parish.

After the merger of the mayor's offices Heumar and Wahn , the place belonged to the municipality of Porz am Rhein , which received town charter in 1951. In the 1960s, the town benefited from its peripheral location in the urban area of Porz and the large open spaces associated with it. The city identified an industrial area on which many Cologne companies, such as Deutz AG , settled due to the low land prices. In the early 1970s, the first large shopping center in the Cologne area called Plaza (today Real ) was built there. The Köln-Eil drive-in cinema is located next to the shopping center .

Eil was incorporated into Cologne in 1975 as part of the city of Porz am Rhein as part of the municipal regional reform .
