Kühne Recken von Novgorod (Alternative title: Wassili, der kühne Warren von Novgorod ; Original title: russisch Василий Буслаев , Wassili Buslajew ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Gennadi Wassiljew from 1983 .

action

Vasily, a high-spirited giant as a bear and the son of a boyarin from Novgorod , goes out with some companions to compete with the Huns who have invaded neighboring realms.

By ship they reach an eerie island, from where the intruders ambush the passers-by and demand a tribute. They land, explore the island and are attacked a short time later. A bloody slaughter ensues, which the warriors can decide for themselves, but their bowing companion Xenia, the daughter of a kidnapped prince, is kidnapped. The Huns flee the island, but one of their ships can be overtaken and boarded. However, Xenia is not found because she is on another ship.

Arrived on a strange bank, the warriors spot a girl on a runaway chariot. The strong Vasily succeeds in stopping the horses, thereby saving the young empress, who then invites him to the palace. There he meets the basileus of the Byzantine Empire , from whom he demands the release of the Rus , sold as slaves by the Huns, in exchange for a chest full of treasures . Later he is appointed empress, who wants to get rid of her husband and offers Vasily his crown. However, he refuses, escapes a subsequent assassination attempt and takes part in the imperial tournament the next day in order to obtain the freedom of the slaves. The best knights from many different countries compete, but Vasily can defeat all his opponents and finally defeats the dreaded Teuton Heinrich von Langschwert. Both the slaves and Xenia are freed, but the princely father of Xenia dies. In his death throes he warns the warrior against a merciless people.

At sea, the bold make their way home to Novgorod again. Vasily announces the bad news there, marries Xenia and wants to assemble a large army and build a defense . The boyars and merchants do not want to submit and incite to fight against him. In the midst of the dispute, a messenger arrives with news that the Huns have invaded the empire. Vasily ends the discord and moves towards the enemy with a united army.

criticism

For the lexicon of international film , Kühne Recken von Novgorod was a “historical monumental film with rather striking drawings of good and bad, strong and weak, heroes and cowards. An unbroken song of praise to heroism, modest in terms of staging, sometimes exaggeratedly melodramatic. "
