Door frame of a residential building in Kızılbağ

Kızılbağ ( Turkish for red vineyard ) is the name of a corridor in the rough Cilicia in southern Turkey . In the area lie the ruins of a settlement from the Roman Empire .

location

The site is located in the area of the former municipality of Ayaş in the Erdemli district of the Turkish province of Mersin , two kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. The remains of the building can be found about two kilometers northwest of the center of Ayaş, the ancient Elaiussa Sebaste , to the west of the road that leads from there to Karaahmetli and Esenpınar and roughly follows the Roman road from Elaiussa inland. In the further course you pass the ancient ruins of Çatıören and Emirzeli . About a kilometer east of the road, on the edge of a ravine, is the Hisarın fortification .

description

The small hamlet from Roman - Early Byzantine times with a view of Elaiussa Sebaste consists of 20 to 25 houses. Older buildings are made of double-shell, small-scale polygonal masonry , the younger ones made of stone blocks . Some have a structure in the interior by belt arches . Remnants of stone internal and external stairs prove that the houses were multi-storey. Noteworthy are the sometimes mighty cuboids of the door frames as well as the protruding consoles on both sides of the door lintels. The residential architecture suggests a certain wealth of the place. Several cisterns with rectangular covers are carved into the surrounding rock.
