The Japanese region of Shin'etsu ( Japanese 信 越 地方 , -chihō ) includes today's northwestern prefectures of Nagano and Niigata and is a subdivision of the Chūbu region . Historically, the term referred to the provinces of Shinano ( 信 濃 ) and Echigo ( 越 後 ), from whose Kanji the name Shin'etsu is composed.
Together with Hokuriku ( Toyama , Ishikawa and Fukui ) it is often summarized as the Hokuriku-Shin'etsu region or, for short, the Hokushin'etsu region . With the prefecture of Gunma it is called Jōshin'etsu ( 上 信 越 地方 , -chihō ; after the former province of Kōzuke or Jōshū) and with the prefecture of Yamanashi as Kōshin'etsu ( 甲 信 越 地方 , -chihō ; after the former province of Kai or Jōshū). Kōshū).
