K3 is a Belgian girl group with a Dutch- speaking repertoire aimed primarily at children. The name of the group was derived from the first letters of the first names of the three founding members, the Belgians Karen Damen , Kristel Verbeke and Kathleen Aerts . In October 2009, Josje Huisman from the Netherlands took the place of Kathleen Aerts. In 2015, Verbeke, Huisman and Damen announced their departure from K3. They were replaced by Marthe De Pillecyn, Klaasje Meijer and Hanne Verbruggen.

The music is produced by Studio 100 , which also produces television series such as “ Das Haus Anubis ”. The main author of the music is Miguel Wiels , together with Alain Vande Putte and Peter Gillis .

history

The band was formed in 1998 by Niels William , originally with the aim of becoming the Flemish Spice Girls . This is evident in the early lyrics. The first single "Wat ik wil" (What I want) was not very successful.

In 1999 K3 took part in the Belgian preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest with the title “Heyah Mama” . The song was received rather negatively by the jury, but the title was released as a single and a great success as a result. The title stayed in Flemish “Ultratop 50” for 25 weeks, including two weeks in first place.

Soon after, the band made the leap to the Netherlands . With numerous other singles and a further 9 albums as well as 3 best-ofs, the band celebrated great successes in both countries. Albums number 8 and 9 (“Ya Ya Yippee” and “Kusjes” / “Kisses”) recorded 50,000 and 20,000 pre-orders, respectively.

K3 also host a television program for children entitled “De wereld van K3” (“The World of K3”), which was initially available in both a Flemish and a Dutch version. Today, however, it only exists in the Dutch version.

On March 23, 2009, Studio 100 issued a statement that Kathleen Aerts was leaving K3 after 10 years. 2 days later it was announced that the other 2 members would want to look for a replacement via a casting show. As a result of the show "K2 zoekt K3", which ran with very high ratings in Belgium (VTM) and the Netherlands (SBS6), Josje Huisman was presented on October 3rd. She won the jury vote, the vote of Karen and Kristel and the audience vote .

The first single with the new line-up, "MamaSé", reached platinum status in October 2009. On November 23, 2009, the album of the same name was released, which consists of two CDs: the first with well-known numbers and a new line-up and a second with new songs.

In 2010 Kristel Verbeke announced in an interview that she was working with Huisman and Damen on a series called Hallo K3! turn, which has been broadcast in Belgium since 2010 and in the Netherlands since 2011.

Her latest album is Engeltjes from 2012. From this, Waar zijn de engeltjes ( Eng . Where are the angels) is the song for the first film with Josje Huisman , K3 Bengeltjes .

On March 18, 2015, the end of the band in its current composition was announced at a press conference, and that all three singers will leave the band this year.

In the casting show "K3 zoekt K3", which was shown in Belgium (VTM) and the Netherlands (SBS6) in 10 episodes between August and November 2015, a new cast was sought. On November 6, 2015, Marthe De Pillecyn, Klaasje Meijer and Hanne Verbruggen were named as winners. Unlike in the previous casting show, this time the voting results were only determined from the phone calls made by the television viewers.

In October 2015, a message was announced that the new line-up was already fixed before the finale, after reports of a lunch box in production with the image of the new group members.

Together with the old line-up, they have been going on a major tour through Flanders and the Netherlands since the end of 2015. This tour acts as an introduction to the new members and a farewell tour for the old band members. Ex-K3 Kristel Verbeke has been the band's new manager since 2015 .

former members

Kathleen Aerts (born June 18, 1978 in Geel , Belgium ) was the blonde from K3. She was a founding member of the band, but left them due to personal reasons in 2009. She was also a singer, actress, presenter of the series “De wereld van K3” and also a musical performer in K3. Aerts was the youngest in the band until she dropped out of K3. Aerts started her solo career in 2009.

Karen Damen (born October 28, 1974 in Wilrijk, Belgium ) is the redhead in the band. She is the oldest member and had her first child in 2010. In addition to singing and acting, she can be seen in other series at K3, for example she played the sports teacher Esther Verlinden in the original version of “Das Haus Anubis”, which is originally called “Het Huis Anubis”. She has been with us since it was founded in 1998. As a solo singer, for example, she already recorded the song "Hard" with the singer Regi. She also released the single "Kzing" in 2014, which reached number 84 in the charts in Belgium. She has been a member of the Belgium's Got Talent jury since 2012. In 2015 she officially left the group, along with her two colleagues Verbeke and Huisman.

Kristel Verbeke (born December 10, 1975 in Hamme , Belgium ) is the black-haired woman in the children's band. She has two children of her own and is married to the Belgian singer Gene Thomas. She is also active outside of K3, as an actor, for example she was the Dutch-speaking voice of Lee Fee in 2010 in the dubbing of the series “Wicky”. She is one of the original band members but is expected to leave the band in late 2015. In 2014 she took on the leading role of the dance teacher in the Flemish youth series Ghost Rocker . In 2015 Verbeke, Damen and Huisman decided to leave the group as singers. Verbeke has been the group's manager ever since.

Josje Huisman (born February 16, 1986 in Heusden , Netherlands ) is the "new" blonde at K3. In 2009 she was crowned the winner in the specially created casting show to find a new member for K3, through her viewer. Her debut single with K3, called "MaMaSé", was very successful. She is the youngest member of the band. She is the only Dutch woman in the band, her colleagues are all Flemish. Since 2009 she has replaced Kathleen Aerts as the new blonde in all the tasks that she had at K3. The first K3 album with Huisman was called MaMaSé. On the record there were new songs as well as classics that were newly sung. In 2015, Huisman, along with Verbeke and Damen, announced that they were leaving the group.

The band's songwriters are Miguel Wiels, Alain Vande Putte and Peter Gillis, who had previously worked together for the Flemish singer Isabelle A.

Filmography

K3 (cartoon series)

A new cartoon series about the fictional life of K3 has been running in Belgium since 2016, with the girls Marthe, Hanne and Klaasje traveling around the world together with their bodyguard X and experiencing exciting adventures between their concerts. Here some K3 songs are presented in the different episodes. One episode is about 15 minutes long. In Germany, the series has been broadcast by the children's pay-TV channel Junior since 2017 , with the songs also being translated into German. It is noticeable here that the old songs that were already sung by Wir 3 are used. The newer songs were then sung by the normal voice actors.

  • Wir3 has been a German version of K3 since 2007: the singers are similar in type to those of the original, but younger. • My3 has been a Polish version of K3 since 2017: the singers are similar in type to the original, but younger. In contrast to the German band Wir3, My3 creates its own songs. The band has already recorded over 20 songs of their own. In addition, the band's second album contains seven covers of Polish hits in new arrangements. The girls from My3 also run their own children's youth program on TV Polsat - the largest commercial TV channel in Poland. It will be broadcast on Saturday morning.
