The Super Talent is the German version of the talent show - format Got Talent . A special talent has been sought in an annual season of the television station RTL since 2007 .

Concept and process

In preliminary rounds, the participants present their respective talents in a stage or open-air performance. A jury decides which applicants will advance and which will be eliminated. The decision of the individual jury members is often shown during the performance by a red or - since the seventh season - green buzzer . The jury officially votes after each presentation. If the jury's verdict ends in a draw, the audience usually decides. From the sixth to the eighth season a direct entry into the semifinals was possible by activating the “Golden Buzzers” by a single juror. The jury made the further selection from the possible semi-final participants. In the semi-final shows, the television viewers decided by televoting about the finals. As a rule, the jury also nominated final candidates in the semifinal broadcasts. Since the eighth season there has been no more semifinals and the candidate moves directly into the finals by pressing the golden buzzer. There the televoting decides on the winner of a 100,000 euro prize and, since the eighth season, on an additional appearance in Las Vegas . Voting can be done by phone, SMS or over the Internet. With season 11, a selection show was scheduled again before the final, in which, however, only the jurors determined the missing final candidates either individually with a golden buzzer or by joint consultation.

Season winner

So far, a vocal performance has won six times, four times a dog training performance, twice a game on a musical instrument, and once an illusionist has won .

Contributors

jury

The jury for the first season consisted of Dieter Bohlen , Ruth Moschner and André Sarrasani . The latter were replaced in the second season by Sylvie Meis , who was then still called van der Vaart, and Bruce Darnell . After three seasons with this jury, Darnell was replaced by Motsi Mabuse in the fifth season at his own request . In the sixth season, Michelle Hunziker and Thomas Gottschalk , who previously both moderated Wetten, dass ..? had given up next to planks. In the seventh season, Darnell returned instead of Gottschalk. Lena Gercke took the place of the pregnant Hunziker . Guido Maria Kretschmer acted as the new fourth juror . This jury remained unchanged in the eighth season. Inka Bause took over from Gercke in the ninth season . On July 26, 2016 it was announced that singer and Let's Dance winner Victoria Swarovski will succeed Bause in the tenth season. A year later, on July 25, 2017, RTL announced that presenter Nazan Eckes would replace Swarovski in the eleventh season. After a six-year break, Sylvie Meis returned to the jury in the twelfth season. In 2019, Sarah Lombardi became the new juror in place of Sylvie Meis. As RTL announced on May 12, 2020, Lombardi was terminated after a season. On June 18, 2020 it was announced that the 14th season will come with some innovations. In addition to Dieter Bohlen and Bruce Darnell, Evelyn Burdecki and Chris Tall are now on the jury. So there will be a four-man cast for the first time since 2014.

Moderation

The first season was moderated by Marco Schreyl . From the second season, Daniel Hartwich was co-host. Four seasons were moderated in this combination. From the 6th to the 13th season Hartwich moderated alone. In the 14th season, Victoria Swarovski is to join as a new co-host.

Seasons

First season

The castings took place in Cologne , Hamburg , Oldenburg and Munich . About 5000 people applied for the three-part show. The talents appeared in the first two broadcasts on October 20 and 27, 2007 on the stage of the Schillertheater in Berlin. The jury - consisting of Dieter Bohlen , Ruth Moschner and André Sarrasani - assessed the performance. She was able to select candidates during the performance by each of the three jury members pressing a red buzzer and thus vetoing them. In order to advance one round, each participant needed at least two positive votes from the jury. The show had up to 6.72 million viewers.

Ten of the 5000 applicants made it to the final. In the final broadcast on November 3, 2007, the audience voted for the winner by televoting : the singer Ricardo Marinello was voted “Super Talent” and received 100,000 euros.

Second season

Michael Hirte, winner of the second season

In the fall of 2008, the second season of the casting show ran. Due to the good ratings from the previous year, the number of programs was increased to seven: a one-hour casting program as well as three further casting programs and three live shows of two hours each. This time the jury consisted of Dieter Bohlen, catwalk trainer Bruce Darnell and presenter Sylvie van der Vaart . Marco Schreyl and Daniel Hartwich took over the moderation.

The first broadcast was broadcast on October 18, 2008. The two semi-final shows were broadcast live on November 15 and 22, 2008. On November 29, 2008 the final show took place with five candidates each from the two semi-final shows. The harmonica player Michael Hirte was voted “super talent” with 72.62 percent of the audience's votes and won 100,000 euros. After the final, another broadcast with casting scenes that had not been broadcast before was shown, in which the final winner Michael Hirte also reported on the first few days after his win. His album Der Mann mit der Harmonica , released on December 5, 2008, reached number one in the German charts on December 19, 2008 , and a little later also in Austria and Switzerland .

    Third season

Stops on the finalists' tour in early 2010.
Barbara Buchholz, ninth in the third semifinals, at the Theremin

The first episode of the third season was broadcast on Friday, October 16, 2009. The other episodes were broadcast on Saturdays from October 17, 2009 to December 19, 2009. Due to the high ratings for the second season, the TV broadcaster RTL increased the number of casting episodes from four to seven and had three semi-final shows instead of two. The jury again consisted of Dieter Bohlen , Bruce Darnell and Sylvie van der Vaart . The season was again moderated by Marco Schreyl and Daniel Hartwich .

Third place in the final went to Petruța Küpper (2010)

During the preliminary round, a Swiss girl named Julia Maria Sakar stood out. She delighted the audience and jury with a song by Leona Lewis. She has already been traded as a favorite, but she was not voted on by the jury in the decisive broadcast and was no longer mentioned. This caused indignation among many viewers. When asked, RTL defended itself as follows: “If children make it to the semi-finals, then only Germans.” This explanation left questions unanswered, as the jury chose two girls from Austria for the semi-final shows.

Of the 30 semi-finalists, ten appeared in each of the three semi-final programs. The television audience voted three participants directly into the final. It was planned that the jury would select the tenth finalist from the remaining 21 candidates at the end of the third semi-final show. However, since the jury could not agree on a single applicant, each of the three jury members chose their own favorite, so that there was a final with twelve participants.

The winner of the third season was Yvo Antoni, who presented dog training with his bitch PrimaDonna. The second-placed singer Vanessa Calcagno and the third-placed panflutist Petruța Küpper released music albums after the final show. From January 26 to February 7, 2010, the twelve finalists performed together in twelve German cities.

The broadcast of the fourth season began on September 24, 2010. Neither the jury nor the moderator duo had any personnel changes compared to the previous year. The number of episodes has been increased to 15; instead of three there were now four semi-finals with ten candidates each. In each of these four programs, the television audience voted two participants straight into the final. She was taken to a clinic for an examination, and Bohlen and Gottschalk acted as sole jurors in the following appearances. The jury chose the fifth place in the audience vote for the fifth place in the final of the first semi-final.

In order to determine which of those who made progress in the preliminary rounds will occupy the six remaining places in the final, a decision show with 17 starters was scheduled on December 9th. The castings of the twelfth season took place from March 24 to June 9, 2018 in 26 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The jury castings were recorded from August 6 to 22, 2018 in the Metropol Theater in Bremen. After a six-year break, Sylvie Meis returned to the jury and replaced Nazan Eckes.

From September 15 to December 15, seven finalists were determined in 13 casting episodes using a golden buzzer. The jury decided directly on four other finalists, the last one the viewers had to choose from among three "heartfelt candidates" selected by the individual jurors. With 41.5% in the online voting, they voted for Stevie Starr, the later winner, Dieter Bohlen's “heart candidate”. The 13-year-old tightrope walker Ameli Bilyk, who was last buzzed by Dieter Bohlen, suffered a broken arm before the final and was replaced by the Fair Play crew . Dieter Bohlen guaranteed her a place in the final of the coming season in 2019 in advance. For the first time, there were participants in the final who had already been in the final in an earlier edition of “Das Supertalent”: Stevie Starr 2010 (season 4, place 7) and Hannes Schwarz 2009 (season 3, place 9). After the last appearance, the voting status of the first three was displayed again and the voting only started again for these. This “Top 3” voting, in which the previous calls were included, did not result in any change in the placements. The winners Christian Stoinev & Chihuahua Percy achieved the best voting result since the second season and the best in a final with twelve participants. criticism

The format is criticized for being “completely undemanding”, which it shares with similar programs such as Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS). In addition, the jury has already rated negatively that some children who are too young take part in the performances. Sometimes the variety of performances is perceived as positive. In the second season in particular, there was criticism that RTL favored the eventual winner Hirte, with whom the recordings had already been completed. Hirte was allowed to play last twice in a row, which is probably the most favorable position. Furthermore, not only RTL, but also the Bild newspaper, in their reporting, paid more attention to the life stories of the participants than to talents in the real sense.

For Quotenmeter.de wrote Christian Richter: "[...] The performances are drawn in Season 3 artificially length [...]. Each applicant now receives his own superfluous clip and is allowed to tell his personal (suffering) story underlaid with dramatic piano music. During the performance, even the smallest hesitation on the part of the jury is reinforced with a brutal bang, seemingly endless silence and an artificial heartbeat. There is no cheaper and more unimaginative way to stage tension and feelings. When a number is over at some point, countless repetitions follow from all perspectives in a clumsy black and white look. A tiny appearance can thus be extended to a quarter of an hour. In the two-hour editions, there is alarmingly little space for applicants. Completely unnecessary as almost 41,000 people applied this year. Where did they all go? What do personal strokes of fate have to do with the evaluation of a talent? Why do they have to be made so public? Without the loss of a loved one [sic] or an incurable disease, no candidate seems to be able to get on the show. You are looking for outstanding achievements and not for «Germany's most tragic stories». "

It is also pointed out that life-threatening injuries can occur if performances such as the swallowing of foreign objects are imitated by watching children and young people.

The show is intended to give the viewer the impression that it is a "casting" in which all candidates take part with the intention of emerging from the show as the winner in the end. In fact, artists are specifically hired for the show in order to appear against Gage as "candidates" on the show. The juggler Alexander Koblikov, who appeared on the show in 2014, is a professional artist booked by RTL who won gold at the 2009 "Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain" circus festival in Paris.

The reactions of the audience are also largely staged. Parts of the audience are paid viewers.

On September 25, 2012, presenter Jürgen Domian sharply criticized the show in his telephone talk show Domian by calling it a "dirty show".

David Grzeschik of Quotenmeter.de praised the performance of host Daniel Hartwich during the first live show of season six: "He [Hartwich] takes what RTL often dramatized up beyond measure, not as serious a time allowed a small swipe at Dieter Bohlen and his often criticized music and loosens the atmosphere with casual sayings. He doesn't need a Marco Schreyl, the new RTL all-purpose weapon has long been up to the big stage. In general, the interaction between him and the jury is fun. "

In the social media, it is criticized that singers are particularly successful, although their practice effort is relatively low and other casting shows are available to them.
