The steam locomotives "AUSTRIA II" to "SALAMANDER" were freight locomotives of the KFNB . They were delivered from the locomotive factory of the Vienna-Gloggnitz Railway Company in Vienna to the KFNB with the axle formula 1B from 1849 to 1853 . They came from the first attempt by John Haswell , the head of the factory, to develop a uniform type. Many components of this machine were identical to those of the passenger locomotives "NESTOR" to "ARIADNE", "BIHAR" to "Üllö" and "JASON II". The locomotives were a further development of Stephenson's long boiler design. They had inner frames and horizontal cylinders on the outside. The wheels were provided with counterweights. From 1853 onwards, all locomotives were reconstructed, that is, they got new boilers and other modifications were carried out so that they differed from one another in details. The table shows the original dimensions.

Between 1868 and 1882 , 33 of this type were converted into 1Bt-n2, as they had largely served their purpose as freight locomotives, but there was a need for shunting locomotives. They were given a saddle tank for the water supplies, which was above the kettle. At the KFNB they initially formed the series V and VII , from 1881 the series IVb . Only one machine, the “HELIOS” remained in its original condition.

The reconstructed but not rebuilt locomotives were taken out of service between 1882 and 1898 . In 1918 , seven of the shunting machines came to the BBÖ , where they formed the 289 series . These were removed from the inventory between 1902 and 1925 . One machine, the "LICAON", has been refurbished ready for use (see series 289 ).
