The steam locomotive - series kkStB 289 was a shunting - Tender Locomotive -series of kkStB , originally from the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway came (KFNB).

The vehicles of the KFNB VII series were created by converting old 1B freight train machines of the "Silesia" class, which became available when new KFNB Vc series C freight locomotives were procured.

Since there was a shortage of shunting locomotives at that time, the decision was made to convert the 1B locomotives with tender to 1B tank locomotives instead of purchasing new ones. The water tank was arranged as a saddle tank above the boiler . A total of 34 machines were converted.

In shunting operation, however, they had a high consumption of coal , so that one was not satisfied with them.

They were used in the marshalling yards in Vienna , Lundenburg , Prerau , Mährisch Ostrau and Krakow .

Of the KFNB VII , 18 more came to the kkStB, which they classified as series 289 . After the First World War , 9 more of the 289 series came to the BBÖ , which they sold or scrapped until 1924 .

A machine, the "LICAON", built in 1851 by the locomotive factory of the Vienna-Raaber Bahn under the direction of John Haswell , came to the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg as a factory locomotive in 1923 , where it was in use until around 1937. In 1958 it was erected as a technical monument in front of the main train station in Linz . Refurbished in the course of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Austrian railways in 1987 and was then housed in the Strasshof Railway Museum for a while . The current whereabouts are not publicly known, the locomotive is likely to be stored in a depot at the Technisches Museum Wien. It is considered one of the oldest operational locomotives in the world, but has not been heated since 2004. It is named after Lykaon , a king of the Arcadians in Greek mythology .
