history

Old Kaba production in the former Kaffee-HAG-Werk II in Bremen

Kaba was invented in Bremen by Ludwig Roselius , owner of Kaffee HAG . Launched in 1929, it developed into one of the best-known German brand names . The brand disappeared during World War II and reappeared on the market in 1949.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Kaba advertised the characters from Walt Disney : there were collection points on the packaging for which you received cardboard figures of just under 50 centimeters (similar to a jumping jack ). These included Mickey Mouse , Minnie Mouse , Donald Duck and Goofy . Yellow mugs with the printed figures and quartet games with the Disney characters were also available. The characters in the jungle book also advertised Kaba.

The stylized palm logo and the lettering were changed in 1969 and with it the extension of the brand name to "kaba fit" was introduced. In 1975, 96% of those questioned answered the question “Do you know Kaba?” With yes. The company and the Kaba brand were sold in 1979 to the US company General Foods Corporation , which has been part of Kraft Foods (now Mondelēz International ) since 1989 . In 2016, Kaba was again sold by Mondelēz to the French investor Eurazeo . In May 2017 the CPK Group emerged, which unites various brands, including Carambar. Kaba has been part of this brand since then.

Ingredients and taste

Historic Kaba packs in the Überseemuseum Bremen

In contrast to classic cocoa drinks , Kaba's recipes today contain a lot of sugar (62% sucrose and 19% grape sugar : a total of 81%) and flavorings . In addition to the classic cocoa variant , Kaba is also available in the following flavors:

The recipe has changed significantly over the years. In particular, the proportion of cocoa was reduced by a third from 30% to 20% in the late 1960s, in line with the more sugared competitor product of the Nestlé Group ( Nesquik ), which has been sweetened since the market launch , and the sugar and glucose content was increased accordingly. This is also the time when the flavor variants are introduced. Today, according to the declaration, Kaba still contains 18% de-oiled cocoa, 19% grape sugar, around 62% sugar, soy lecithin , salt, as well as flavorings and vitamin additives ( niacin ).

In 2011, Kaba Bio (“from controlled organic cultivation”) was published. However, the product was withdrawn from the market after a while.

Food chemical analysis

In the 12/2008 issue of the Stiftung Warentest test magazine , 25 cocoa powdered drinks were examined. Kaba was the only one to exceed the currently discussed maximum value of one microgram of ochratoxin A per kilogram. According to Stiftung Warentest, the mold toxin ochratoxin A can damage the immune system and kidneys in humans in large quantities. It is carcinogenic in animal experiments.

Berry and the plantation world

From 1985 to 1990 the packs came with a commercial: Berry the Plantation Bear . For several years now, there have been short comic strips on the back of the packs that tell stories from the world of plantations. Usually at the beginning a child is drawn out of reality through the Kaba vortex into this world, where they then experience an adventure together with Berry. In the end, Kaba is drunk every time. In 2009 the design of the packs, the logo and the comics on the back were revised and modernized. Berry and his friends no longer present recipes, but rather they return to their origins and experience adventures in their plantation world.
