The Kabeli ( Nepali काबेली ) is a left tributary of the Tamor in the far east of Nepal .

The Kabeli rises on the western flank of the Kangla Kang ( 5562  m ) at an altitude of about 4300  m . Its upper course lies in the municipality of the Village Development Committee (VDC) Yamphudin . The Kabeli initially flows to the west, then turns to the southwest and after the confluence of the Inwa Khola again to the west. In the lower reaches it forms the district boundary between Taplejung and Panchthar . The Kabeli finally flows into the Tamor 7.7 km south of the town of Taplejung . The Mechi Rajmarg highway , which connects the district capitals Phidim and Taplejung, crosses the river 2.5 km above the estuary . The Kabeli has a length of 58 km. It drains an area of around 900 km². The mean discharge is 5.6 km above the estuary 61.4 m³ / s. The lowest monthly discharge is 8.63 m³ / s in February, while the highest monthly discharge is 181.71 m³ / s in August. Important tributaries of the Kabeli are Tawa Khola , Phawa Khola and Inwa Khola . Landslides occur time and again in the Kabeli catchment area.

Fish fauna

There are 31 known species of fish in the cable. Mountain catfish of the genus Glyptothorax are considered the most important food fish in the Kabeli. The migratory fish that cover longer distances include the devil catfish Bagarius yarrelli and the carp fish Tor putitora (“Golden Mahseer”) and Tor tor . Carp fish that migrate over shorter distances are Schizothorax richardsoni from the genus Schizothorax and Neolissochilus hexagonolepis . Other migratory fish only occur in the monsoon season from June to October during spawning in the river.

Hydropower projects

There are plans for a hydropower project ( Kabeli A ) on the lower reaches of the Kabeli below the confluence of the Phawa Khola . The project envisages a 14.3 m high and 60 m long dam with a 335,000 m³ reservoir. The location of the dam would be 5.6 km above the river mouth. A 4327 m long tunnel with a diameter of 5.65 m would lead the river water south to the above-ground hydropower plant, which would be 15 km downstream on the bank of the Tamor. The planned power plant output is 37.6 MW with an expansion inflow of 37.73 m³ / s. It is planned to start up the power plant only during the peak periods during the dry season.

Another hydropower project ( Kabeli B-1 ) with 25 MW output is planned at the confluence of the Inwa Khola .
