history

From pre-Christian times, the country was ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first civilization was the Indus culture . The area has been ruled by the Rajputs of Jadeja since the Middle Ages and was often involved in battles with Muslim armies. In 1540 Khengarji I founded the Kachchh State , which existed until 1948. Since the devastating defeats against armies of the Mughals in 1590 and 1591, the state had to pay tribute to them. From 1762 to 1765 the ruler of Sindh attempted to conquer Cutch. The then ruler of Cutch, Godaji II, had to cede part of his land to the Shah of Sindh. In 1770 a family member of the ruling dynasty married the Shah of Sindh and he returned the conquered territories as a wedding gift. Because Godaji's successor Rayadhan III. built a terror regime and wanted to force all residents to convert to Islam, he was overthrown in 1786. From 1786 to 1813 a council of twelve ruled and appointed General Fateh Mohammad as regent. From 1813, princes from the previous ruling family ruled the country again. After a defeat in the Battle of Bahdreshwar by the British, Cutch became a British protectorate. From 1819 to 1924, the Princely State formed the Cutch Agency and thus administratively belonged to the British administrative region of Bombay Presidency . In 1924 the Cutch Agency became part of the Western India States Agency , which in 1944 was merged into the Baroda, Western India and Gujarat States Agency . After India gained independence in 1947, what is now the district became an independent state of India under the name of Kutch State . This state became part of the Bombay state in 1956 . In 1960 this Indian state was divided and the area came to the newly created state of Gujarat.
