Canal road between SZ-Lebenstedt and SZ-Hallendorf

The Channel Road is a 3.4 km long, almost minimum of four lanes but not without crossing developed Trunk Road in Salzgitter that the largest district Lebenstedt and the commercial area Engelnstedt with the seventh largest district Hallendorf and Salzgitter AG (factory driveway gate 4), the largest employer in the city connects. Together with the north-south road and the industrial roads in the middle and north , it is one of the most important regional roads in Salzgitter.

The western part of Canal Street forms a section of County Road 13 , while the southeastern part is part of County Road 12 .

course

Kanalstrasse begins with four lanes at the intersection of Peiner Strasse ( Kreisstrasse 10 ) on the eastern edge of the Lebenstedt district south of the Engelnstedt industrial park as Kreisstrasse 13 with a maximum speed of 100 km / h. In the west this is called Neißestrasse and opens up the eastern urban area of Lebenstedt. Peiner Straße leads in the direction of Lengede , Broistedt and Salder . After a few hundred meters you will reach the intersection of Hans-Birnbaum-Straße. The Engelnstedt industrial park is located there. In the further course the Kanalstrasse represents a bypass of the district Hallendorf. The maximum speed allowed here is 50 km / h, as the road runs directly along the northern and eastern outskirts and smaller residential streets branch off from it. Halfway there is a junction at which the district road 12 branches off onto the Westerholzweg to the north in the direction of Bleckenstedt . From now on, Kanalstrasse is also dedicated as Kreisstrasse 12, while K 13 ends here. Finally, on the southeastern outskirts of Hallendorf, the factory entrance to Gate 4 of Salzgitter AG branches off to the east. The four-lane expansion of the Canal Road ends here due to the now decreasing volume of traffic. It ends after a few hundred meters at the “Am Hillenholz” intersection. Kreisstraße 12 continues on Nord-Süd-Straße, via which Gebhardshagen and Salzgitter-Bad can be reached. Before that, there is a junction on Industriestraße Mitte in the direction of Watenstedt , Industriegebiet, Immendorf and Bundesstraße 248. In the direction of Lebenstedt, it is not possible to drive onto Industriestraße Mitte.

history

According to maps of the German Empire from 1904, there were already streets as the eastern border and to the west of the village of Hallenstedt, the location and course of which corresponded to parts of today's Canal Street. Here there was a windmill in the west and in the east, on the road to Bleckenstedt , since 1866 the new Hallendorfer cemetery. The western end of the then street around Hallendorf was connected to the north-south direction Peiner Straße and in the south to the Watenstedter Weg between Salder and Watenstedt .

From 1937 the Reichswerke Hermann Göring of the Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG were built east of Hallenstedt and the Hermann Göring city to the west . At that time, large barrack camps were also built in the vicinity of the village, some of which were located directly on today's Kanalstrasse. The eponymous Salzgitter canal , built in 1940, ends around 150 meters east of the road .

At Western wrong track, indoor village with the northern Bleckenstedt is consisted from the beginning of the 1940s until the end of World War II the Arbeitserziehungslager Hallendorf (Warehouse 21), a prison camp for foreign forced laborers, which from the realm works Hermann Goering (Salzgitter AG today) was built. In this respect, the street from Westernholzweg via today's street “Am Zollbrett” and the eastern part of today's Kanalstraße served as a transport route for systematically organized Nazi forced labor at this location during the war . Furthermore, today's Kanalstrasse largely corresponds to the course of the streets at that time, which were part of the connections of the Reichswerke AG for ore mining and ironworks "Hermann Göring" to other local traffic routes.

In the northeast, the canal road was re-routed over a kilometer length over the site of the former camp 25, so that a larger curve radius became possible when bypassing Hallendorf.

With the later construction of the autobahn-like Industriestraße Mitte a few hundred meters to the south, the northern section of the Kanalstraße was relieved to a certain extent, while the south-eastern section still serves as a link between an access road to Salzgitter AG and Industriestraße Mitte. For the north of Lebenstedts as well as Engelnstedt and Hallendorf, Kanalstrasse is currently an important feeder towards the industrial area near Watenstedt , which includes the steelworks, Alstom Transport Germany and MAN Truck & Bus AG.

With the integrated urban development concept 2004 it was planned to emphasize the village character of Hallendorf again. For this purpose, the edge of the village in the north to Kanalstrasse was to be developed as a green space and a sports and recreation park was to be created at the end of the canal on Kanalstrasse.

State of development

The condition of the canal road on the individual sections:

section designation length Stripes Dividing strip Crossing freedom comment
K 10 Peiner Straße - Factory entrance Gate 4 Salzgitter AG K 12/13 2.9 km 4th No No rural
Factory entrance gate 4 Salzgitter AG - K 12 Am Hillenholz K 12 0.5 km 2 No No rural

Integration into the Salzgitters extra-urban road system

The connection of the Kanalstrasse to other important traffic arteries such as the Nord-Süd-Strasse , Industriestrasse Mitte and Peiner Strasse means that Braunschweig and other districts such as Thiede , Salzgitter-Bad and Gebhardshagen can also be reached in a short time.

Finally, Industriestraße Nord ( Kreisstraße K 39 ) complements the four-lane supra-local road system in Salzgitter's north.

memorial

Memorial stones cemetery Jammertal

The Jammertal Cemetery Memorial is located directly to the north at the western end of Kanalstrasse . Almost 3,000 people were buried there who died during the National Socialist regime as a result of forced labor and inhumane accommodation and treatment in Salzgitter.

Hallendorfer workshops

The Hallendorfer workshops have also been located on the northern side of Kanalstrasse since 1967. The establishment of the Christian Youth Village Association in Germany for people with disabilities includes a work area with twelve workshop departments and aims to make it easier for people to get into work.
