Canton of Saint-Ursanne
The canton of Saint-Ursanne ( French Canton de Saint-Ursanne ) was a canton of the First French Republic and the First Empire on the territory of today's Canton of Jura in Switzerland .
Mont-Terrible department
It was created on March 23, 1793 with the formal annexation of the Raurak Republic decided by the French National Convention . The canton was part of the Pruntrut district in the newly created Mont-Terrible department and comprised four municipalities:
- Ocourt
- Outremont
- Saint-Ursanne (main town)
- Sel people
According to a circular from the Ministry of the Interior of the 7th Frimaire of the year VI (November 27, 1797), the canton of Saint-Ursanne had 3020 inhabitants, 901 of whom were eligible to vote.
Haut-Rhin department
According to the law of the 28th Pluviôse of the year VIII (February 17th, 1800), the canton of Epauvillers was abolished and merged with the canton of Saint-Ursanne. The enlarged canton was now part of the Pruntrut arrondissement in the Haut-Rhin département and comprised eight municipalities:
- Epauvillers
- Epiquerez
- Montenol
- Ocourt
- Outremont
- Saint-Ursanne (main town)
- Sel people
- Soubey
Based on the figures in the circular of 1797, the canton of Saint-Ursanne had 3897 inhabitants, of whom 539 were eligible to vote. By resolution of the Congress of Vienna on March 20, 1815, the territory of the canton was added to the canton of Bern ; since 1979 it has belonged to the canton of Jura .
