The captain's quarter on Sankt-Jürgen-Strasse

The Kapitänsviertel (or also: Gängeviertel) in Flensburg - Jürgensby is a quarter with many aisles on the slope on the east side of the Flensburg harbor , where many captains and seafarers had settled in earlier centuries . Many of the old houses in the district are now considered cultural monuments .

background

The Kapitänsviertel begins roughly at the beginning of Sankt-Jürgen-Straße and ends roughly in the area where the road makes a sharp bend near the St. Jürgen church , up the slope ( location ). The numerous corridors that lead off from Sankt-Jürgen-Straße in this area, such as the helmsman's corridor and the boatman's corridor , also belong to the quarter.

Since the city of Flensburg insisted on a building ban beyond the Flensburg city walls until the end of the 18th century , the acquisition of the house and land was very difficult. Since the 16th century an alternative was established near St. Jürgen , because the land there belonged to the St. Jürgen Hospital and the city could hardly exert its influence there. Apparently a few fishermen initially settled in the area of the captain's quarter. Even a seaman who had earned well on sea voyages was able to buy a piece of land for his own house there. In addition, the taxes outside the city were much cheaper. From around 1750, houses were apparently built by coastal captains, ship officers and craftsmen . From their new home they had the best view of the fjord . Since then, they have been able to watch incoming and outgoing ships and what is happening in the harbor from their living room windows.

Special buildings

Today, the district is anchored in the city's tourism concept and tourism tours are organized through the district. Outstanding buildings in the Kapitänsviertel are:

  • the house at St.-Jürgen-Straße 14 was built at the beginning of the 19th century and initially belonged to the boatman Boy Hansen and his wife Ingeborg. The wife had brought the property into the marriage as a dowry.
  • the house at St.-Jürgen-Strasse 20 was built around 1780 by a captain who had made money through long-distance trade with Norway, France, the Mediterranean and the West Indies . The door of the house was created in the Louis Seize style.
  • the house at St.-Jürgen-Straße 21 was built in 1781. Above the door there is a plaque with the inscription: "Soli Deo Gloria / Hans Thielsen / Engeburg Thielsen / Anno 1781". - Such Soli Deo Gloria inscriptions can be found on some buildings in the city.
  • the house at St.-Jürgen-Straße 69 was built in 1866. It was formerly used as an inn called Altona.
  • the Pilkentafel ; Since the beginning of the 17th century there was an inn popular with seafarers, which was easily accessible by boat from the other side of the harbor. The memory of the inn is still kept alive today by the street name and the Pilkentafel theater workshop .
  • the office building of the division command at the lower edge of the captain's quarter at Hafendamm 32.
  • the Margarethenhof on the southern edge of the Kapitänsviertel

Of course, captains also lived in houses in other parts of the city. The Fruerlunder Kapitänshaus is 500 meters away and the Sonwiker Kapitänshaus is 2.5 kilometers away .
