Karel Toman
Karel Toman (born February 25, 1877 in Kokovice , † June 12, 1946 in Prague ; birth name Antonín Bernášek ) was a Czech poet, journalist and translator.
Life
Toman attended high school in Slaný and later the archbishop's seminary in Příbram . He began and dropped out of law studies, worked as a clerk in the National Assembly archives, moved to Vienna , traveled through Germany, England, France and the Netherlands.
His poetic career began in the vicinity of the literary circle Moderní revue to Arnošt Procházka , Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic , Karel Hlaváček , František Gellner , Stanislav Kostka Neumann , Jiří Mahen , Fráňa Šrámek , Rudolf Těsnohlídek , Viktor Dyk .
In 1917 he became editor of the daily newspaper Národní listy . He also published in other magazines.
After the First World War , Toman worked with the Lidové noviny .

The poet joined the Czech democratic literary movement and is classified as part of the group of anarchist rebels. He made his debut as a poet on February 1, 1895 in the Moravian magazine Niva . He described contemporary society with a view to the socialist movement, conflicts between people who leave their traditional environment, revolt against society, suffer in war, break from disappointed love and death.
