The 1987/88 UEFA Cup was the 17th edition of the competition and was won by Bayer 04 Leverkusen against Español Barcelona after the team coached by Erich Ribbeck had lost 3-0 in the final first leg and the decision in the second leg was only made on penalties fell.
Other participants from the Federal Republic of Germany were Borussia Mönchengladbach , Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen . Dynamo Dresden and BSG Wismut Aue played from the GDR . The Switzerland sent the Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Sion into the competition, Austria was with the Linzer ASK , FC Admira / Wacker and FK Austria Wien represented.
A total of six rounds were played in home and return matches. In the event of a tie, the number of goals scored away first decided, then an extension and finally the penalty shoot-out.
